Surely this can't be right?
« on: 15 March 2013, 09:07:16 »

Before I start I must say that, although my back treatment is moving too slowly, I think the NHS is generally very good :y I should also add that I'm a big believer that the NHS should be "scrapped" and rearranged as a compulsory insurance scheme with assessed government funding as per most of Europe ;)

Anyway... Moving on to what I want to say! I don't read the Daily Fail but this is a link I have picked up elsewhere. There are several local papers carrying the story too and the cause has been featured on local TV and radio news programmes today.

I want to add that I do have a tentative connection to the family... I went to the same school as Steve (Sam's father), although not at the same time. Steve made an appeal on Monday night for help and they have raised in excess of £2k for the cause in the 24 hours since the accounts were set up :y :y The power of social media is phenomenal and this is really gathering momentum :y

Anyway... I'm rambling! What I am shocked at is that because Sam turned 16 in January the NHS have told the family that it is unlikely they will fund his treatment but had he been under 16 they probably would have! :o :o Talk about age discrimination, even though it is against the NHS Constitution >:( >:( Who has the right to decide that a young man should face almost certain death just because he is 60 days older than 16 >:( >:(

This isn't a plea for donations or sympathy, although I know the family will be very grateful if you feel you would like to donate, but more to highlight the disgusting treatment (or lack of it!) that they are receiving from the NHS >:( :'( Surely this is wrong? ??? OK, I started by saying the NHS should be "scrapped" but, at present, it isn't and anyone can come in from anywhere in the EU and get free treatment  :o Something wrong there IMHO ::)

It is absolutely disgraceful Paul!  Makes my blood boil!  >:(

Even if there is this stupid cut off date of him being 16 now, what difference does that make?  The article says he's been battling this awful disease since he was 9!

So, the NHS treats him for years, and then just walks away?  :o >:(

To be fair, they haven't said they won't treat him... They are happy to give him Photon Beam Radiation Treatment but it carries a high risk of many very serious complications. His consultant has recommended Proton Beam Therapy wich won't be available in the UK until 2017.

The unfortunate thing is that even though it is available in Switzerland (again, a Patient has the "Right" under the NHS Constitution to treatment in any EU Country or Switzerland ::)) he still can't get it >:( Hence the recommendation to travel to the US and one of the leading centres in treating Brain Tumours in the specific location that Sam's is

I've actually found the whole thing quite emotional... The plea from Steve was that of a man resigned to the fact he was going to bury his son :'( :'( But the momentum that has gathered on the various media's being used, particularly Facebook and Twitter, has been phenomenal and complete strangers have made donations and offers of help! It has restored some of my faith in mankind and it really does look like, if it can carry on at the current pace, Sam is going to the US in 8-10 weeks for the life saving treatment he needs :y

Having given up smoking this week I'm planning, somewhat ironically, to donate what I would have spent on tobacco this week :y

Very, very sad, but I fear that there will be many more cases like this as the money dries up. TBH, I'm quite surprised that £200,000 will cover it, with travel and accomodation I thought it would be more. I hope they  manage to raise the necessary funds and, of course, that the treatment is successful.

I agree, hence my support of a complete change to compulsory insurance and subsidised treatment instead of the current free system ;)

National insurance was introduced as a way to pay for pensions and healthcare. How many working people would be able to afford another 'tax', which is what it would be in essence.
With recession, immigration, unemployment and population growth, we have the makings of a perfect storm and, I'm afraid, I can't see any way out.

to be honest even if you had insurance you still wouldn't be able to get the treatment here and there would be possibly be some get out clause that stops health tourism...it is utterly ridiculous that the treatment is not available here in the uk,but that is the quango call NICE

Well, things are really gathering momentum! So far over £6000 raised in 4 days :y And that's without the numerous events now planned :y
