New windscreen fitted. Noisier?!?!
« on: 18 March 2013, 17:28:52 »

As title suggests I had new windscreen fitted about 2 weeks ago. First time I've ever needed this done so was a new experience to me. Went through the insurance and had to pay £70 excess, guy from AA came out and fitted the new screen. Ever since though I think I can hear more wind noise from along the lower end of the windscreen, is it possible that it hasn't been sealed properly and how would I check this. Doesn't seem to be any water getting in but it def seems noisier and even the missus has said the same. Any ideas??

I'd call them back and ask them to return and reseal it as it's obviously not right.

Had similar with a Cavalier company car many years ago

The master marksdtm had this or similar issues a couple of years back iirc, he is the man to reply to this but it is a well discussed issue .
Didnt the AA buy autoglasss or was it  the other way round. :-\

Had this on a 7 Series before, which normally fantastically quiet, was very noticeable when a new screen was put in. Another fitter came out, only to realise the previous guy hasn't sealed the screen at all on the bottom edge, and missed patches all up one side, how I'll never know.

Ah the joys of windscreen fitters.

Get them back, I had mine fitted five times before it was correct!

It will be poorly fitted and probably has a gap along the bottom.

AA came back out today to have a look at the new screen. Took the guy for a drive and he was fairly confident that it had been fitted correctly and sealed but said that he would do a refit anyway just to be on the safe side and that the previous fitter had used the wrong type of trims anyway. Once he removed the screen it became obvious that it hadn't bonded properly along the bottom edge, it had bonded to the trims but not the screen! Anyway screen is now back in again with proper trims fitted this time which do look much better/neater so just waiting until it sets now to give it the sound test! Thankfully it hasn't cost me anything to have this re-done it was all at the AA expense which you would expect as it was their fault.

Is there anything to look out for when its being re-fitted? To make sure its done right?

I ended up with black goo over my nice white interior trim thanks to a well known fitting outfit!

Result :y

I took no chances with mine. Bought the correct trims from Vauxhall, removed the old screen and cleaned the frame. All the AA fitter had to do was put the frame on the screen and glue it in place :y

As above and watch to ensure that the sealant is one continuos bead :y

Apparently they don't normally remove the scuttle trim :o no wonder they keep getting called back ::)

I cant say for definite yet that this one has been done right either, still waiting on the bonding agent to set before I can take it for a spin but he seemed to do pretty much everything the same as the last guy. He did say that its very easy to slip up and make a mistake when fitting them especially around the bottom edge as its an awkward area to get at. He also said they get called back to quite a few which leaves me wondering how they make any money?!?! Fingers crossed though as its bloody annoying when its not right.

The proper trims make an awful difference. Wish I had a before and after pic but its only now that I see the proper ones in place that I realize how bad the others were. They stuck up so much and just didn't sit into place properly. He said that the new trims are the proper rubber ones but I cant remember what the others were made from. Note to others: Do not accept the cheap horrible trims, push for the proper rubber trims that should be fitted

The trims consist of two rubber trim strips, 1 is both sides and the top, tother is across the bottom, and 4 trim frames. All told about £100 or so from Vauxhall. Yours almost certainly has had a pattern trim fitted :y

The fitter who was out this time Al said that they have trouble getting the genuine omega trims in and when they do come in they get snapped up immediately. The others simply don't fit properly. I'm still wondering how AA windscreens make money from this service though??
