The new, improved, flame resistant omega that I have seems to be short changing on third gear.

Happens around about 40-50 mph.

Spends a few seconds in it before going to fourth.

Same coming down the range too, gives a noticeable engine breaking effect.

Just wondered if this was something that it has learned from towing a pikey wagon in the past, or if its normal, or, knowing my luck, if the gearbox is about to go bang!

Can the adaptive learning be wiped so it relearns?

If you keep your foot fully buried, you'll find it hangs on to 3rd until about 129mph. So I've heard.


You will find sedately driving that it will try to pop into 4th quite quickly, if thats your driving style.

some time with the battery disconnected will do the trick

I have been driving ms daisy since I picked the car up, in an effort to eek out the fuel.

However, I happened to "hear" first hand today that it will indeed hold on to third gear rather well.

Not sure on an Omega - on a Jag its 10 minutes.

I have been lead to believe that disconnecting the battery on an Omega makes absolutely no difference to any ECU's as the memory used is non-volatile, probably due to the age of said memory chips !!!

Actually, on some of the earlier GS820 TCMs with earlier firmware, you will find in Sport, with the throttle nailed, it won't pop into 4th, and will bang against the rev limiter, giving the driving that well know, sad, "thats frecked it" sinking feeling. Apparently.

You don't need to clear the adaptions, it constantly adjusts.

To clear fault codes, fix the fault, and use Tech2 or similar to clear them.
