Headlights, Bulbs and bits for RoadTrip!
« on: 20 March 2013, 16:02:30 »

OK, end of April I've got to do 2500miles around Europe in my FL MV6.

I've been slowly going through a list of niggles - wishbones, front wheel bearings which were eating the front tyres etc and now I've just got the headlights to sort out.

Here are my Q's which I'm sure have been asked many times in separate places, but I don't want to thread hijack! Basically, I need them sorted and ready for MOT and the trip!

1). I've got the standard FLD/Vision error come up last month. Is this most commonly a motor or a sensor fault? Is it easy to find (both) as replacements?
2). What D2S temperature is standard for the Omega HID bulbs as I'd like a spare as well as the usual H7 main.
3). The lenses are yellow and goosed with more scratches I'll be replacing these lights at £59 on the bay OK?
4). The pump for the headlight washers packed in a week ago, (but windscreen one is OK) where is the best place to get a replacement one S/H?
5). Will the switch behind the light for LHD mode work if the alignment motors are goosed still? (not a problem if getting new lamps/motors/ etc though)

Any help in advance would be greatly appreciated! Then I've just got to find a rear section / backbox and get the O/S cam cover done as it's weeping from a torque bolt.

1) Check arm hasn`t come adrift on front sensor bolted to n/s wishbone
2) 4300K...............5000K is recommended max
3) Depends on quality and whether seller guarantees intact adjusters during transit
4) Breaker here may have one otherwise around £7-10 off the bay
5) Yep

Sensor arm is centre of pic to the right of droplink

If arm still attached to front sensor, check sensor plug contacts clean (remove and spray with contact cleaner & refit).  To diagnose whether sensor or motor you will need a chat with a tech2.
Easy enough to remove motors and check they are clean and functional (should start with power across them).
Could also be a broken/corroded wire in loom between sensor and motors (had that on the old Elite Estate)

Headlight lenses will polish clean with toothpaste on a damp cloth then use body wax to seal http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=nwLB3B5-IVU&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DnwLB3B5-IVU

Get a spare crank sensor (genuine Vx) and carry it with you !!! (and the right torx bit) as one of those will stop the V6 deader than a dead thing !!   and its a 10 minute job to change it :)

Ta Entwood. It had a new one in July, so that bit should last - toherwise I'd be taking one!

Bit of an update - I had a look around and the sensor is attached and appears wired in correctly on the front - what's the next step? Test it somehow or fit a SH/replacement sensor? (anyone have one?) Or a check of the rear one?

Will try the toothpaste trick!

Well the car made the 2000kms to Poland to pick up parts, attend a wedding then head back to ole blighty after picking up a load of parts for the chevvy, ascona and mig.

Lowered the beams for LHD, and checked out the wiring to the light sensors and all seems OK. Short of a tech 2 (which I should have access to from next month) I can only assume one of the sensors have packed in!
