Smoking Diesel engine
« on: 22 March 2013, 21:50:20 »

I 've had a Renault Kangoo 1.5 turbo diesel van  for the last 6 months, it's covered 103000 miles,  my first ever diesel engine, so I'm still learning .

lately I've noticed black smoke belching out of the exhaust, especially if I put my foot down in third gear.

What is the problem causing this? Is  it maybe the engine or the turbo on it's way out? Any suggestions would be welcome.

I've seen some Treatment additive made by Wynns for such a problem, could such an additive have any effect?

Whens the last time you serviced it.
Black smoke is over fueling which can be caused by a dirty air or fuel filter

Supermarket diesel is more prone to this.

Hence, last diesel I had, I always put premium BP/Shell in for MOT smoke test ;D

Check air filter and induction pipework.
Change fuel filter and fill it with this:

See what happens! ;)

If your van usually just potters about town and rarely goes on the motorway, then the smoking is perfectly normal imo, a diesel will get sooted up if its not given a good clear out every few days.....nothing to worry about i expect......if its smoking when its idling on a hot engine, then there maybe a problem...or it needs a good service.

Diesels with particulate filters are prone to block up if just driven around town all the time (tho i doubt your kangoo has one) The 'fix' to unblock them or 'regenerate' is a trip down the motorway for about 40 miles with engine revs of about 2.5k ...... i only say this to show you that soot will build up if not given a good clearout  :y :y
