Have replaced several of these to many various cars including numerous Omegas but only now came to think of an issue: TIS says to mount them "tube"side to tailgate, so you'd attach the bright piston-end to chassis. However, most/if not all, I have seen have been as I would imagine is the most usual and "right" way, "black" barrel-end attached to chassis and piston-end to tailgate.

So, which way is right and why? I can not see any reason for another way being better and therefore more correct than the other but I also am sure that they have put this direction-thing to TIS for a reason

Might not be the correct answer but just applying my own littel bit of logic

If the jam end is mounted to the body/chassis side of the car when it is being opened the the housing section is facing downwards and would stop any water etc from being trapped on the only effective open part.

Facing the opposite way it could be subjected to possible contamination from water etc.

In reality cant see either way being any more right or wrong than the other either

I see your point but also the situation is vice versa when closed: If the strut is as TIS says then when tailgate is closed the housing (black) part end section is upwards and due that collecting water and dust on the seal

My logic is:
Gas strut uses compressed gas as the spring.
Gas leaks out much more easily than the damping fluid and the seals need to be kept wet to maintain a seal.
The tailgate spends 99.99% of it's life in the closed position.

So: mount the strut so that the shaft is pointing downwards when the tailgate is shut to keep the seals wet and stop the gas from escaping

(don't know if that corresponds with the instructions on TIS. Couldn't understand what they were saying TBH  )

Ok, your logic is very understandable and I agree with it but is exactly the opposite to TIS (TIS picture id L0721, instruction id 0003638, can not post any pics): according to TIS the shaft would end up being upwards as the black part is on the tailgate side... Quite confusing one.
