Traction Control light on?!
« on: 08 April 2013, 01:09:23 »

Hi All
I changed the ECU temperature sender today. So it was plenum, scuttle and intake off time again.

Checked the breathers as I was there...all clear, I can blow smoke into the breathers at the throttle body end and it comes out of the dip stick tube and oil filler neck. But found oil dripping from the left throttle plate with a pool gathered in the rubber pipe to the bag pipes and lots of oil within the surface area around each intake hole on the plenum, intake manifold and black plate (forget it's name).

Anyway, when everything was back together again I started her up and didn't have any rough idle for the first time so fingers crossed the new ECU temperature sender is the cure.

However, strangely I now have the Traction Control light on as well as the EML.

Could I have disturbed something whilst I did the above work? I double checked everything was connected correctly so can't understand why it is now on.

I have no knowledge of how the TC works i.e. does it use vaccum? One thing I did notice was the consumption dropped from 19.1 to 12.4 within 5 minutes of starting her up and there was a strong smell of petrol in the exhaust fumes.

Any ideas please?

Dave

Know it sounds condescending, but you never know - not turned it off in cabin?  Light on means TC off ;)

If you knew me, that would be a perfectly sensible question dbug  ;D

Started her this morning and the TC light was out...and no I didn't touch the switch until after she was running  ;D

Must of just disturbed something or released some vaccum some how. I have been having trouble with high revs when pumping the break pedal but for some reason that has stopped now.

Got a hissing sound from behind the plenum but even after yesterday it's still there. It's seem to get quieter as she warms up and seems to be coming from the fuel lines....if I loosen the bracket and move the pipes a bit the hissing sound changes. I booted her the other day and the fuel gauge went up!!!!! And the injectors sound very loud especially in the cab with the door shut.

EML is still on with the standard codes but i'm hoping that the ECU was confused by what appears to have been a faulty coolant temp sender as the rough starting does seem to have been cured. Hopefully, if I put the MAF I got from Steve or even my original MAF on then the EML will go out and clear the codes....not sure if my luck runs that far though  :)

Gotta get her on a Tech 2, so have PM'd Kevin to see if he's passing one day.

Thanks for the cheeky input lol

Sounds like you got an induction leak back drivers side - behind fuel pipe bracket probably as releasing bracket affects sound level of leak ;)

You could try gently spraying a bit of carb cleaner in that area to confirm (if leak revs should rise), or if not comfortable with that get a smoker to blow smoke in that area and watch where it goes :y

That said, shouldn't cause TC light issues though.

Tried the carb cleaner but got a bit worried about it bursting in to flames lol got a pipe with one end in my ear and moved the other end around behind the plenum and couldn't pin point anything.  Messed around with the breather pipes, just moving them and squeezing them but nothing again...spent hours on it.

It's the sort of sound that changes just by putting your hand in or just by moving the position you listen from. What's the chances of having an air leak into the fuel line/s but with no petrol leaking out? Or could it just be the sound of the petrol going through the lines?

Put my original MAF in and it seems to be running weaker (pinking when I boot her) and struggles when I rev or pull away when cold but improves as the engine warms up...suggesting a weak mixture. The other 3 MAF's I've got don't work either.

The only plus is that getting a new ECU temp sender has cured the rough starting.

I am a smoker but it's been too windy lol

TC's all good now

Cheers  :y

No chance of fuel lines drawing air, fuel system is under pressure so any leak would see fuel spraying everywhere  :y

When you cleaned the breather pipes, one of them connects to a valve which releases collected petrol vapour from the tank and feeds it to the engine every so often. If the pipe is loose or the valve has packed up, then you'll. get a petrol smell, and a vacuum leak :y

Where aboots in Surrey are you?

Cheers Henry, thought that would be the case but you never know...especially with Miggies lol

Al. I checked that valve with the pipe in my lug hole and could hear it clicking I think the ECU controls the solenoid, no smell of petrol either.

I'm in Chilworth, just south of Guildford  :y

Misread your original post ::)

From your description, I would start with the small vacuum pipes next to the brake servo :y pay close attention to the tee piece off the main servo line, but be careful as the conection on the non return valve is fragile :y the rubber connectors perish and split...

Not a million miles from you, but laid up at the minute...
