chaning the alternator - you had to do what????
« on: 12 April 2013, 18:26:32 »

hi all

i've just had a local garage change my knackered alternator for a working £30 used one

i haven't had the bill yet, but the owner has said it'll be pricey as they had to drain the water system among other things, and they had my car for 3 hours

when i gave them it I asked if they wanted my haines which explains how to do it, i nearly suggested leaving my laptop with the pics and description on the maintenance guides

i forsee an arguement happening - can anyone tell me (ballpark figure) how much it should cost and how long it should take to do the job

thanks for any replies  :)

Hour tops
Bagpipes out
Disconnect battery
Remove aux belt
Remove two securing bolts and pull alternator forward
Disconnect the wires from the back.

Agreed. If you can't do it in an hour you are not fit to call yourself a mechanic. :o

When mine failed and Greenflag appointed agents did the job, I was on my way 1:15 minutes after pulling up at their centre. They had to unload from a flatbed and get it into the garage in that time as well.... and mine has a few LPG pipes, electrics and additional coolant pipes to contend with :) :)

Is anybody able to send Tiger a copy of TIS for this job? That would give him a bit of ammunition  :-\

supplementary - for vehicles with lower engine compartment cover
Job no j705100005 - 0.2 hours

So still less than 90 mins then :-\ even allowing for the engine tray not having already being removed by a speed hump or three...

Im trying to imagine why they could possibly need to drain the coolant to change the alternator !  :o ::) ;D
They are ripping you off mate.Offer them 1.5 hours labour charge as payment,or a call to trading standards.Their choice. ;)
The "new coolant" should be pretty obvious btw. ;)

I am wondering if the LPG install and potential evaporator position impacted the time.

But alternator is a sub 1 hour job on a standard engine

Even removing the evap is a sub 10m job, refit 15m tops...

...although we don't know how this install is done
