F1: China...who'll win?
« on: 13 April 2013, 19:31:56 »

Good qualifying session. Amazing to see the performance of the Mercedes following Hamilton's move... plus how competitive Rosberg is!

One thing I don't get as I've only been watching this since last season is this...

Why did Vettel ''not set a time'' in Q3? And I thought everyone had to? and as he didn't set a time how come he gets 9th place and not tenth? confused.com

Ah well that is tactics. Gone are the days that the fastest man on the grid is likely to win.

Here is hoping that Lewis makes his pole stick. If Not that Raikonen wins (can't believe I said that!)

Vettel and Button  both went out on hard tyres in qually 3 looked after them and did not set a time. The first 10 on the grid must use the tyres that they qualified on with all those in front of them on softs they will have to pit around lap 6 for the harder tyres so strategically Vettel and Button hope to gain a big enough advantage before they have to use the soft compound ( both compounds must be used in the race). Vettel was 10th but was promoted to ninth after Webber was penalised for not having enough fuel in the car to take a sample.

As to who wins, Hamilton, Rosberg, Raikonen, Vettel ???

So what tactic made him and RB decide to not set a time?  :-\

Conserving tyres for the race due to high degradation, plus the RB's could not match pace, they have start race with same tyres. Jenson went tactical and went into Q3's on medium tyres to be in a better position for the race.

Hamilton did well, his critics I note are not responding here  ::)

Mercs hurt tyres though, he will really struggle to convert it to a win. I think ice man Kimi will get this, assuming no mistakes.

Button used the hard tyres in Q3, same as Vettel.

Qualifying is one fast lap, the race is many laps, so there are many parameters like tyre conservation etc.

Interesting Vettel and Button strategy today, looking forward to see how it pans out?

It is beginning to look like Hamilton have made a good move by switching to Mercedes. I think Mclaren need to have a major shake up as with their resources they are consistently under achieving, not only on outright speed but also race tactics.
