Glaucoma,
« on: 16 April 2013, 21:51:28 »

Hi all I hope you dont mind me posting this, but it is quite important..

Hi i`ve just been diagnosed with the early stages of it, and it frightens the cr*p out of me, does anyone else have it, how do you handle it, has it made a great difference to your life style.
Apparently its called the "silent stealer" because it just creeps up on you,.I thought it was just the cold and wind that was causing my eyes to run and just mentioned it in passing to my Doctor on my last visit, he suggested I visit the opticians sooner than later...., good job I went..
If its caught in the early stages  a simple application of special eye drops daily can significantly slow further damage right down, if it gets left and progresses you are in trouble and it can not be reversed..

I recommend everyone to pay a visit to their opticians asap.

Here endeth the lesson..I dont normally post things like this but felt everyone should be made aware how serious this can get

And if your over 40 with a blood relation with Glaucoma you get free eye tests. Both my parents had it, kept in check with eye drops..

Look after your eyes, your sight can deteriorate very
quickly, my dads eyesight has nearly gone due to age related macular degeneration , they've tried everything for him , all too no avail  :(

Hopefully they've caught it early.  :y

My Dad's got it. He's been on Xalatan drops for years and as said, daily eye drops keep it in check. I have the eye photo done with my eye check to hopefully pick it up early.

I can't agree more,I went to Specsavers to get my eyes checked just in case I needed to change my prescription for driving a coach and the first thing said to me was that they were going to write to my doctor as I had a 'problem'. Anyway long story short,I had what is called an epiretinal membrane which in short is a puckering of the membrane that covers the retina and as soon as it was diagnosed the DVLA whipped my PCV licence away...job gone! and now 18 months and two eye surgeries later I've just jumped through their last hoop and got my coach licence back.Just got to find a job now :-\,I now apreciate how precious eyesight is and how much we take it for granted, eye tests are so easy to arrange and done on a regular basis like me the problem was picked up early, and although I've now got a bit of a wonky eye it's been saved and now hopefully I can get on and earn some money and buy more Omegas ::)

A close friend of mine has just discovered she has this condition after having her eyes checked out.  She is now very worried that she could "go blind", although I have done all to try and reassure her.

It is times like this that I appreciate, in a strange way, being a diabetic as my eyes are regularly screened by a diabetic clinic as well as being checked for eyesight by an optician.  Hopefully whatever  happens later will not be such a shock as it has to my friend.

Hi Lizzie, I must admit that I felt like that for the first couple of days, but the more I have spoken to others the more "relaxed" I feel, I didnt realize how "common" it was, and have spoken to friends who have had it for over 20years now, without me being aware, just as long as you do the eye drop treatments etc there isnt a problem,
Blindness is something that has always worried me after a close friend suffered a "macular degeneration" problem, but as deadly as glaucoma can be if left unattended , with the right medication carried out on a daily basis it can be held for many many years.
Just dont read internet searches, that frightens the life out of you..mostly American based, most wanting to sell you soe expensive treatment / medication.
