As many know, I bought a new car about 6 weeks ago, and all has been well.

My tax is due at the end of the month, so went onto the website to buy new as you do.

Only to be refused because I don't have valid insurance!

Very strange....Logged onto my insurance, and low and behold, I had mistyped the reg.  Simple error, I had caught the wrong key.  I had set all this up on my phone in the dealer, and its online only, so had no real certificate to notice on.  OOPS!

Now, in the last 6 weeks, I have done over 3000 miles, driven in front of, behind, overtaken, been overtaken by many police cars.  I have driven past the vans with cameras pointed out,  I have been up and down motorways, through specs cams, dual carriage ways the lot.  The car must have spent most of its life on camera.

So why the hell haven't I been stopped and questioned?  The reg I had 'insured' doesn't even exist.

If Ive done this accidentally for nearly 2 months, then how many out there are doing this full time?!?!?!

Its no surprise there are so many uninsured out there, Ive proved how easy it is to get away with!

Anyway, all insured now, and should be able to buy my tax tonight, as you have to wait 24 hours between tries.

did exactly the same with my van when i changed the insurance, on line again, went to tax it

the only thing that it may be is that the car was still shown as having insurance by the previous owner maybe

If it was shown as insured on the databases, guess I could have bought tax.

maybe they never stopped you as you looked like a fine upstanding sort of character

or is the new car ex plod or disabled tax exempt, mind you you have to then apply for tax at a licencing centre

They never spotted my lack of MOT for the 6 weeks it had expired despite the 3000+ miels covered during that period.

Ive gone longer without an MOT too in the past.

Considering the amount of cameras out there, they dont seem to be doing much useful monitoring.

Just been doing the sums and Ive saved nearly £500 in fuel so far!

Don't forget this IS England and because every thing takes SO long to get anything done,it may take a while for the system to grind into action,not saying that this is going to happen in your case but I've been dealing with the DVLA for the past 4 months and every letter that I get from them states that it make take up to twelve weeks to deal with any enquiries with them. Another example is that I made a freedom of information request with my local council three weeks ago who state quite proudly that all FOI requests will be dealt with within 5 working days....not!! 
I would think in your case that you have made a genuine mistake and you have documentary evidence to prove, it so even if you were stopped etc I think your insurance company would/could bottom it for you..after all they have taken your money

Yes, I imagine it wouldnt take long to work out what was happened and that I was paying to insure the car...just with an invalid reg.  That said, I'd got it wrong, and would hold my hand up to an honest mistake, and it was noones fault but my own.

Its no wonder loads of people don't bother making their cars legal, even if caught they just take the car off you and get a slap on the wrist.

No doubt they just go out next day & get another car

Why was it not picked up when you filled in the reg ... once you have done reg on insurance site.moneycrapmarket.com you get all car spec and the. Are these details correct

The ANPR manager for the local Police force gives regular lectures at the radio club of which I'm a member.

He's given demos of the system and very impressive it is too. Bear in mind that we're looking at a whole county, ANPRs on all major routes into and out of the county and dotted around with a reasonable density inside.

There's extensive filtering of the data available, but every vehicle that passes every camera gets a record stored in a database and retained for a reasonable period.

Turn off filtering out of vehicles flagged due to no tax/mot and the screen just becomes a blur. No chance of picking up a single item until it's scrolled off the screen. In other words, it's much too big an issue even to manage in a control room, let alone coordinate a Police response and apprehend.

He said his patrols will pick up said offenders if they have nothing of a higher priority to do, an activity he described as "shooting fish in a barrel".

The system is used mainly to combat vehicle theft, fraud, major robberies and serious crimes to the person. The data mining that can be done on the collected records is very impressive.

One example he quoted was a rape case. They had a description of a dark blue car, possibly a golf, and an approximate time and location. A search on those terms reduced the possibilities from several tens of thousands of vehicle movements to two. A bobby was diverted from his beat to knock on 2 doors. One suspect knew nothing about it and seemed genuine, the other was shifty as hell. Crime solved the following day, and at virtually no expense whereas using traditional methods such a crime might cost £1M to bring to prosecution.

They simply have bigger fish to fry than tax evasion and driving without MOT / insurance.
