As part of my engine and gearbox swap, I'm removing the air-con.

Wanted to check though... the 2 fans immediately behind the front grille, are those just for the air-con.  I'm guessing they are because the coolant radiator has its own fan attached to the back of it, but want to be sure before binning them.

There are two thermostats in the radiator. If the engine/radiator gets really hot then all three fans run at high speed.

Yes Air con fans, they run off the condenser

If your removing the aircon rip them out, it saves a lot of weight and allows more airflow reducing the running temps

I have owned Omegas with this mod and done it myself so can vouch for it, there was someone on here that left them in place after the condenser was removed and they just acted as propellors

As a percentage of 1700kg I'm sure the fans weigh the square root of sodd all.

How does it allow more air flow when it's sat on the bench in the garage?

As said, all 3 fans are brought into play for engine cooling if required. In some climates, I'm sure the single small fan behind the radiator would not be sufficient. You'd probably get away with it in the UK, though.

Airflow at speed isn't really an issue (this is the only thing removing the fans could improve). It's getting enough cooling in traffic that's the issue.

Fans, rad and condenser say 15KG at a push 0.9 ish of the 1700kg but any weight reduction on an already thirsty car is surely a good thing is it not, you wouldn't run around with a bag of sand in the boot if you didn't need to so why would this be any different ?

The removal allows better airflow into the main rad as the aircon rads are situated in front of it last time I checked , based on your thinking logic I am not sure the storage location of removed or replaced parts plays a mitigating factor to the end result 

Personal preference really like most vehicle modifications

The fans and rads are already out due to engine swap so it's simply a case of not bothering to put them back

I took mine out after i found the condenser fell to bits in my hand  ran the car through the summer without the twin fans with no problem , even in traffic

Yeah, the straight sixes could produce a LOT of heat and the non-aircon versions of those had just the viscous fan behind the rad.  Mine was quite heavily tweaked and still had no problems in traffic.

They're going in the bin!  Well, actually, going in the box of bits I've removed so I can weigh it at the end for a laugh - there's quite a lot going in there!!

As others have said the decision to keep or remove the AC is a matter of personal preference. My preference is to have a car with 'all the toys' and to have everything in working order. Your car your choice.

The linked thread claims that the Omega runs hot because of the AC. Not true. The Omega runs hot (85-95 degC) because it was designed that way to meet emissions regulations. If you don't let it get up to temperature then ECU stays in 'warm up' mode and wastes fuel. If you fit an aftermarket ECU then you can run at whatever temperature you like.

Yeah, totally agree Andy.  For me, I find aircon'd air too dry for my liking so I never use it and with me having to change the engine anyway, removing it is easier than putting it back together    If it loses a kilo or two in the process then that's all the better.

I'm also with you on the running temp.  It's controlled by the thermostat anyway so, as long as that's in good working condition, you shouldn't have issues with "overcooling".  My concern was really whether the one fan was enough to keep things under control in a traffic jam situ.
