MV6 Exhaust Manifold Leak
« on: 05 May 2013, 10:14:01 »

The RH Exhaust manifold is blowing on my 3.0L MV6, can't see if it is cracked or the gasket. at first I thought it was the Manifold to exhaust joint but that is ok. Can't anyone tell me how hard a job it is to remove the manifold to replace the gasket, I have read the studs can snap and there is the access issue. any tips would be appreciated.

Know you say right hand side but say your in side the car, what side then.

It's not a great job, i did one only last weekend for mot as was ticking bad on start up and clearing a little when hot.
Job took me over four hours as coolant pipe had to be removed also :(
Mine was drivers side so that the easy one in my eyes.

Did the nuts come off the stud ok? and how is the access? when you say ticking did you change the manifold and gasket then?

Only manifold gasket, you can't remove the manifold without  A LOT of work!!!

All studs come out, in my eye's that was easy that way!

Still haven't done the job yet but what is the advantage of changing to 3.2L manifolds? do they fit the Exhaust pipes?
and will the drivers side manifold come off to change the gasket?

I just did my off side and it was a pig of a job, on and off I probably took about 6 or 7 hours to do it (trying to dodge life and the weather) and I've still not finished or even started the near side...
Mine was blowing because it didn't have a gasket and half the studs were loose...
As for the advantages, the 3.2's are supposed to be freer flowing and they don't use the SAI so mine's fitted to the bin....

vibration can loosen the nuts-well that's what I reckon anyway- pig of a job to do manifolds while in car however not impossible-problem is coolant pipe/heat shield removal-after that-easy :y However left side is total pig of a job TBH- :y

out of interest how do you guys locate manifold leaks? I still have some blowing on start up  :'( but then goes so presumably its small and the heat expands the metal to close it up.

but obviously theres a dirty great heat shield and other stuff in the way

Dave if its just the exhaust to downpipe bolts that youve snapped, just drill them out with a 5/16 drill and use nut n bolts, if its manifold to downpipe then drill out rethread with m10 tap and use new studs,or m10 stainless bolts.
