HBV
« on: 08 May 2013, 20:55:40 »

Looks like my HBV is leaking, puddle of water under the car each time I use it and the level in the coolant bottle dropping.  :(

As the concensus on OOF is to use genuine VX, does anyone know the price I should expect to pay at a stealer?

Also the price for coolant and as my coolant bottle sensor is non functioning, the price for a new bottle, unless a second hand one is considered acceptable.

Thanks.

Would you expect HBV to start leaking as soon as the engine is started?

Have tried all combinations on climate panel, leak seems the same on all.

You can never tell with hbvs - some leak only within a given climate temp setting range, others can leak all the time irrespective of climate setting.  You should be able to feel if hbv wet, but check carefully it may be one of the attached hoses ;)

Considering that a new one is only a tenner, it's one thing that is probably worth just changing if you suspect it's failing.

New hbv for a tenner :o - genuine Vx ones are in excess of £35 now - pattern ones false economy and won't last ;)

Mine would only leak when the engine was turned off, it would then basically piss itself  :-[

Silly question, bear with me. When HBVs leak, where does the coolant piss out from? Because the rubber hoses are clamped on to the valve very tight so it cant be there...can it? This is where is was feeling for leaks on mine   :-\

Two known weak areas are the vents just below the vacuum diaphragm housing (circled) when the plunger seal fails, and the bottom pipe (arrowed) as it`s a glued joint to the main body
