Cars packed am going home
« on: 09 May 2013, 12:34:37 »

After over a months working 7 days a week in lecturing the British and French Navy's at Pompy dock am finally off home. Been living out of 3 suitcases at my parents home in their tiny little box room in Selsey. The cars all packed up,Fuel tank is full and a packed lunch(thanks Mum.
Booked on the 16:00 ferry at Dover for the 840 mile run back home. Should arrive at my door around 03:30. Once at home ive got one weeks work to do then off for a three weeks holiday on the African coast relaxing with the family and a spot of fishing.

See you all in a couple of months time and hopefully the weathers a bit better then.

Have a good one .. :)

Tad confused though .. you're in Pompey .. going to la Rochelle ... so you drive to Dover then Calais - La Rochelle ?? ... why not go Portsmouth - Caen or St Malo ?? Ferry price difference probably equals the amount of fuel used doing a few hundred miles extra ??? and the time would also match at a guess ???

according to ViaMichelin ...

Portsmouth - Dover - 139 miles
Calais - La Rochelle - 435 miles

Total : 574 miles !!!

Caen - La Rochelle - 270 miles; St Malo - La Rochelle - 204 miles

300 miles worth of fuel/time/wear must pay for a lot of ferry difference  !!!

Just my thoughts.. nowt else ... :)  :)

Dover to France ferry £100
Portsmouth to France ferry £500 (I appreciate if taking inconvenient times and days you can get it down to about £380)

The western crossings are so expensive it is what stopped me holidaying in France. Just as easy to hop on plane from Southampton or Bournemouth airport to getto Spain

The money my company save by me choosing the Dover ferry price difference i gain in my wage packet. Same on tolls. I don't pay for fuel it's all on a company fuel card. My route is via my in laws in Walton upon Thames to collect my sons birthday presents then via Angers to La Rochelle. The trip works out around 640. Just a tipo error on my behalf. Also don't like sitting on a boat for hours twiddling my thumbs that's the other reason for the Dover ferry.
As for wear and tear, tyres, mileage etc i claim back via the company i work for instead of having a company car

Did a project on this very point in Maths at school ::) even twenty five years ago, the most economical (cost) route was Dover-Calais, and as long as you totally avoided gay Paris, the actual journey time was a very close second :o

Basically, if you're heading west or south then Dover-Calais, and if you're heading east of south, then Dover-Dunkirk  :y
