Epic Fail...
« on: 21 May 2013, 01:06:02 »

So after sorting out The Mig's misfire with a new dispack and fitting a new HBV when I spotted it was leaking at the weekend, I confidently presented the old girl for MOT today and....... she failed!!!! Miserably!!!  :'(

Front wishbone bushes are gone, hand brake and rear brakes no good, exhaust blowing so failed emissions and battery insecure!!!  ::)

The wishbone bushes and brakes well hey ho...  ::)  The blowing exhaust I was surprised at as it sounds fine, but I guess maybe you only need a small leak to throw the emissions...  :-\  But I'm a bit pissed about the insecure battery as you really have to pull it about to get it to move!  :o and although the handbrake lever is on the top notch it holds and I live on a bloody steep hill so I should know!!!  ::) but no, the computer says "NO!!"

The bloke said "It's all these new regulations mate and we've just spent £18000 on new equipment so we're the same as Europe...."

Pah!! Vote UKIP!!!  ;D

Fix it I think...  :-\  I've just got the motor running nicely again and the LPG system seems to be working better with a Bosch dispack as opposed to the pattern one I fitted before.  :)

The guy at the garage said he'd do all the work for around £200 if I supply the parts and to be honest that dosn't sound too bad as I havn't got the time or inclination to DIY all that at the moment...  :-\

Seems to me that these new regs are trying to make older cars try to attain a higher spec than they were
manufactured to. The scrappage scheme obviously didn,t get enough older cars off the road so lets make
it as hard as poss to pass the MOT. >:(

Yes, the guy said that the insecure battery came under a new regulation.

The battery is held in by the bolt and metal plate that's standard on the car and as I said earlier you have to give it a good tug to move it...  ::)

So where do you go from there? I guess strapping it in with a couple of heavy duty cable ties?  ::) Then they'll probably fail it for having a non-standard adaptation.....  ::)  ;D

Surely if the battery is held as per how the manufacturer built the vehicle and it is in good condition then he cannot fail it. No ifs or buts.

Exactly. If it's the correct size battery, so fits the baseplate properly, is held in using the manufacturer's bracket, and the baseplate has not corroded away or anything, it's secure. New MOT regulations or not, the customer is not required to retrospectively upgrade his car to pass an MOT.

believe or believe not a insecure battery wasnt a fail a couple of yrs back, but you could get 3 points by plod for said offence, makes it bit harder to identify someone if their face has been burnt off by acid from the battery that flew through windscreen in a prang

It's a fair point Mark, but note it's for labour only and at £40 per hour that'll be 5 hours worth.  The exhaust is the unknown quantity at the moment...  :-\  and he did say 'around £200' so if it's a bit more I won't be too upset....  ::)
