facelift 2.5td rear susp
« on: 29 May 2013, 16:12:15 »

Hi all, had my 2.5td Elite for a couple of weeks now and really starting to enjoy it. The only thing is the rear suspension seems to be very 'crashy'. Does this model have self levelling dampers on the rear? It seems to sit quite high and when travelling over uneven or rutted surfaces especially it crashes away at the rear like a good'un! It's just been given a new MOT (not my choice of tester - motor trader special ::)) Can anyone give me some advice on what it might be?

Cheers
DERV

ps just got through my first 20litre batch of filtered blended WVO this week, running like a champ.

Elite should have S/L shocks. Check that a small airline (black pipe) is connected towards top of each shock body, if yes, disconnect arm (yellow arrow in pic) and with ign. on, raise lever (red arrow) and see if shockers move.

Doubt that it'll keep running like that much longer - the injection equipment on these BMW lumps simply doesn't tolerate that stuff.

Refuel only with good ol' 'filling station' diesel, and avoid the cheapo supermarket juice ... seriously! ;)

Afaik SR71 blackbird (or something like that) has been running his 2.5 TD Omega on vegoil for quite some time. I would imagine that 100% veggie wouldn't be the way forward, but a blend of veggie and other various things (petrol/diesel/ veggieboost)may well be ok. ;)
An old mechanical Bosch pump however will pump any old crap it encounters. :)

I reckon it'll be just fine, it's a blend of around 50% diesel, 40% veg and 10% unleaded. Filtered to 1 micron slooooowly through coffee filters - it's lovely stuff.
Running on veggie seems to provoke mixed reactions, the idea not seeming to sit well with all. We pays our money and takes our choice in life, i would rather spend the spare cash on my daughter :)

Sounds like a decent blend to me.I run my cavalier on 95 % veggie, 5% unleaded and a splash of veggie boost, filtered to 1 micron through sock filters. It runs great on it.
45mpg at 50ppl - happy days. :y

From the description, sounds like self levelling rear shocks are either topped out or have lost all their damping. Any sign of oil dripping off the rear shocks at the bottom bolt?

Would you run the engine with no oil in the sump?
This is what your doing by putting veggie in you fuel tank. The injector pump is lubricated with the oil in proper diesel.
You could add a small amount of two stroke to the veggie mix but as said these hate veggie :'(

I take your points on board and i'm certainly no expert when it comes to fluid mechanics but I do know that vegetable oil has far better lubricity properties than diesel. It also has a higher calorific value than diesel meaning more energy is produced per given molecule. My oil is used once from a reputable source so is very clean (I filter down to one micron anyway) then it is mixed with 20% regular unleaded. Yes that will lower the cetane rating but it is a trade off to achieve correct viscosity and good burn characteristics. The only issue I can foresee with using vege is the possible stress on the lift pump and also the seals in the inj pump itself due to the rather high temperature these particular pumps operate at (that would apply to regular diesel aswell obviously).

I'm not trying to ram my use of alternative fuels down anybody's throat here and I do appreciate it can split opinion quite vigorously but I the sort of person that doesn't enter into these sorts of things with my eyes closed; I have carried out a fair bit of research on the subject. I'll keep everybody posted as I go along :)
