How much to run my computer...
« on: 10 June 2013, 16:23:31 »

Hi all...

As sad as this sounds, my computer is running about 15 hours a day when I am at home. I have not got it on any power down settings. The spec is....

750watt PSU, AMD dual core 6000, I gb Graphics card, 8 gb ram, 22"widescreen monitor, and a 19" tft monitor.  :y

From these figures, can anyone give a rough idea what its costing me to run it. Just got normal tariff electricity. Just rough idea would be ok, just to placate swmbo :(

Also got BT 3 Hub, and a 3 in one printer (Hub is on 24/7 )

If it was running flat out then it would be hitting close to 1kWh which is about 13p (very plan dependent)

Based on that £1.95p per day.

Reality is that it wont be running anywhere near that max power so about a third to a half so 65p to 97p per day

yep.. an average pc consumes max 50 watts per hour which makes 1.2 kwh so correct figures...

yep.. a modern PC will be around 50 watts when not being thrashed IME. Plus whatever the monitor, printer and other peripherals take.. Then again, AMD CPUs always were a bit sweaty and the above is based on my experience of intel I5/I7.. Not sure what the recent ones are like. Maybe say 100 watts?

I can recommend one of these, if you really want to know (wait for it to be on special offer and you'll get it for a tenner, too.

My breakdown was as follows:

19" monitor - 35 watts
22" monitor - 45 watts
High end PC - 150 watts
router / modem - 20 watts

This is: ((35 + 45 + 150) * 15) + (20 * 24) = 3930 * 0.13 = 51p

I have two monitors, cem, because I do Flight Sim, and its easier to drag stuff onto the second screen, instead of opening other windows to view. :y

Does also come in handy for comparing files or browsing one file and working on another :y

Thanks for those figures and links

Given that its an AMD with a pouncy GPU, I'd say 150W is too conservative. The memory will hit it as well.

I'd also say you will be losing a fair amount (10s of watts) in that PSU.

On the upside, Homehub3 is quite frugal (if nothing plugged in to gigabit port (why would you)), and pulls 0.46A at 12v, with wifi on. Though its still a shit router ;D

450W for office type use, add 100-150W if caning it.

Whats yer leccy bill, Terbs?

Even small (AMD - for direct comparison) blades with a pair of SAS disks pull 404W at near idle (or the one I'm looking at right now is). And thats a blade, not server, so fans and PSUs are on top.

Dual monitors is for home use. Not that common in workplaces here.

Last bill was £197 per quarter....bear in mind I do not spend a lot of time here.... Gas central heating, Gas cooker, tv, washing machine, worktop dishwasher.....and heavily used computer :y

Computer has got two 500gb disks and three others, 160, and two 80's internally. Mistake...there is also a second at 160gb in there too :y

If you can consolidate the disks with fewer decent sized ones... ;)
