I can barely believe...

...are we moving away from the blanket/cover all ills "sipped kills" attitude?

An attitude that inspires the "I can be as useless inattentive and dangerous a driver as I like as long as I'm not going too fast" approach to driving... which also gives me a chance to make driving 3rd 4th or 5th on the list of things TO DO WHILE DRIVING....?

Ahem<and breath>sorry rant over.

No way. :o

How long before it is part of an EU directive to standardise speed limits in the EU?

Germany seems, quite rightly, to be very resistant to imposing a blanket speed limit on their Autobahns. Accident and death rates make them their safest roads. Of course their Eco yogurt knitting, tree hugging green party want a blanket limit as the extra CO2 causes AGW is helping to stave off our next ice age.

If German autobahns had our drivers on them, I reckon there would be carnage. Not that german drivers are any good, but they do at least recognise that they need lightning fast reactions if they are going to sit up your jacksie at 140 MPH. ;D

The average UK sales rep pissing about with his i-phone and his i-drive in the fast lane  like he's the only driver on the planet wouldn't last more than a couple of miles.

In reality, the speed limit hasn't been 70mph for years.
Most traffic coppers seem quite happy to let you drive along at 80 - 85 as long as the road / traffic conditions allow.
Anymore then that and you tend to get a evil stare as they pull alone side of you.

Raising it to 80 will just mean that the drivers out there who can barely drive at 70mph safely for whatever reason will feel that they have to increase there speed even further which will cause further accidents.

Keep it at 70 for me, get rid of all fixed camera's and get more coppers on the road with the mandate of ............ If you have our boot down but are driving in a responsible and safe manor then a little stare should be all that is needed to keep drivers in check BUT if your driving like a complete cock then you should be banned from the road and given a rather good kicking  ;) ;)

Speed does not kill, dickhead drivers do  >:( >:(

70mph limit introduced as a result of the AC Cobra being tested on M1 if I recall correctly.Personally I have long maintained that speed does not kill,it's the mis-use of speed that does the damage.Sadly I think no matter what the limit is set at you'll still get the dumbo doing 50mph in the middle lane for the next 200 miles!

Current (2011-15) ACPO guidelines are:

* 79mph-86mph     Fixed penalty (£60 + 3 points) or speed awareness course
* 87-95mph            Fixed penalty (£60 + 3 points)
* > 95mph              Summons, max £1,000 and disqualification

So I assume it will now be ok up to 90mph (80+10% + 2mph) :o

Seems to be a daft idea to me. They are restricting the speed of vans and lorries and then going to increase the speed for cars. To much speed differential I think.

Still I will will stick to bumbling along with the vans and lorries  ;D

In truth there are not enough traffic police or speed cameras on motorways to stop everyone running in the highlighted speed zone.  For some time, to my knowledge, unless you are driving dangerously, committing an offence besides speeding, are in a dodgy looking motor, have a marker on your car, or activate the ANPR you will be allowed to go on your way up to 90 mph (this was certainly true in North Hampshire when a close friend was the Superintendent of traffic there!) as the traffic police just cannot be constantly engaged in issuing speeding tickets when far more serious issues are arising all around the few doing the job.  It is purely a case of what is practical.

Will an 80 mph limit make any difference to police enforcement?  Maybe not, as the same constraints will apply and with resources being in short supply.................... :P :P :P
