Handbrake needs sorting, so I went under to start a daily regime of plusgas on the heatshield bolts - as advised by several posts on the subject - for the next 3-4 days, only to see that two of the bolts have already been sheared off and nowt is left. Heatshield is still secure however, but this does not bode well for the removal of the rest of the bolts.

So, are they bolts ? or studs ?? If they shear off with what does one replace them ? and how easy is it ?? There is very little room under there when working with just axle stands holding the back end up so simple stuff please !!!!

Silver Bullet's heatshields have been baked bean tins for 6 or 7yrs now. Just as well, seeing as my grumpy MOT tester normally fails the handbrake.

There are more of them than are instantly visible, and it's a really grubby job.

Would also suggest slackening the shoes off as far as possible, tensioning the cable only at the handbrake end to four/five clicks. Then once it has settled after a week or so, set the adjusters on the hubs

On the plus side, new cables are peanuts

so.... what does one replace a sheared stud with ??  I'm guessing that if the darn thing shears getting the remaining bit out will not be a simple task, and there's already two missing as it is ...

If sheared on the "overlaps", self-tappers

Don't bother to replace the threaded studs. I just drill holes in the heat shields, then drill smaller holes in the floor and use self tapping screws.

Self tappers worked well when doing my LPG Polyflex route, small pilot hole then just blitz in a small self tapper

Even better if you use hexagon-headed self-tapping bolts ... similar to those that secure box-profile roofing sheets.
Need to be careful with choosing the correct length though ... so as not to protrude through the carpet!

Thanks for the ideas ...  the plusgas regime will now commence with the plan to do the handbrake early next week .. hopefully a week of plusgas will free off the remaining ones, but we know what to do if it doesn't !!

I bodged mine back on using lumps of that 'epoxy metal putty' stuff, just got a blob mixed up, put it where it was meant to go, and put the screw in, held fine

Just a tip if using self tapping screws, spray or brush some wax on the thread and arond the screw head to help combat the rust

The car is fine without heatshields (these ones). Save weight. "Every little helps"
