Cruising speed
« on: 18 May 2008, 20:51:10 »

How do everybody out there :y. I have been doing quite a few motorway runs lately, which is something I have not done a lot of in my Miggy. Can anyone tell me what the optimum fuel efficient speed to set the cruise at? I'm not concerned about speed just economy. Mines a 2.5 petrol auto.

Does yours have the fuel computer onit?

Your profile says you have an Elite, if so and it's gotthe computer then just set the display to instant MPG.

Obviously hills and weather conditions will make a difference but on my Carlton Diplomat I found the MPG varied on warmer/colder days

Yep, I have been experimenting with different speeds but thought someone with prior knowledge may have the info

I`ve found setting cruise at 65 MPH gives my 2.5 V6 the best steady-speed economy; tyres inflated to the high-end of the load/pressure range helps very much with M`Way economy too IMHO.  :y

I seem to recall -- back in the petrol shortage days --- the figure of 56mph was bandied about as being the most fuel efficient.

Generally tho -- the most wastage is in trying to get to a cruising speed to quickly and stopping / slowing a lot. Smooth acceleration and slowing will help. A little game we used to play to encourage smooth driving habits  was to place an apple on the bonnet and try to keep it there whilst in motion !!!!

Yeah - 75-80 seems best for my 3.0 auto.  On a run I get about 32 mpg - absolutely amazing, really :).  Of course, back and forward to the shops or into town gives a figure of about 17 mpg, which is dreadful >:(

Tow a caravan for any distance & then you'll know what crap mpg is!!  ;D Just come back from Grassington (Skipton-ish) and although I generally get around 20 mpg, while on the M65 up a long incline the instantanious consumption was hovering around single figure mpg! I was in 3rd gear too!  :-?

If I ever express a desire to tow a caravan, my children have instructions to book me a place at the nearest euthanasia facility :(

I find, as long as you're above about 50 so the autobox stays locked up in top gear, the faster you go, the more it burns. Can achieve 36/37 MPG at a constant 65 or so. Any faster and it gets more thirsty. As said, avoid changing speeds - look ahead and plan lane changes in advance.

Makes for a very boring drive, though. Best to cane it and sod the expense. :y

In case of my tractor, anything below 70mph, I tend to keep it in 3rd to achieve best economy (and performance), hence why 70-80mph seems to be the most economical speed for that.  Below 70 in D/4th, it is outside of its power range, and seems to use more fuel.
