they performed a test and showed that the compressor has gone
"Gone" meaning what actually?
Yep, seals can dry out if A/C not used regularly.

What test did they perform, 12V direct to compressor?

Not sure but they had the machine attached to the valves where the gas is refilled from, he told me that he injected an oil to perform test. Sorry not a very technical person  :-\

Doesn`t sound very knowledgeable ???
To confirm if the compressor is knackered you need to unplug connector and apply 12V & 0V to contacts and see if the clutch engages

I have two of them, but neither of them have been used on a car for at least 6 months. I have heard it said that the seals can dry out if they aren't used,so it might be a bit of a gamble tbh. Might be worth asking for opinions before diving in ,but I only want £20 for one,and your close enough to not have to pay the postage, which would be expensive for something so heavy.
Has been known, but seals usually dry out due to the effect of surrounding heat (engine/exhaust) and compressor being switched off for very lengthy periods. Removed from car and adequately stored shouldn`t really present any problems

Easy enough to do Nick. Jack up N/S front (axle stand) and either run extended cables from battery to comp. or connect 2 probes to plugged in battery charger croc clips and touch relevant inputs on comp
