Are you saying both the inside and outside handles are non operative? The direct method onto the lock/catch rods might help. Does the lock pin move - ie is it locked and not unlockable or unlocked but the catch won't undo?

The problem was within the mechanism itself. All the rods and links were present and correct. Central locking was very much working as well...

Managed to work out how the lock actually worked from the replacement one that Chris supplied and release it :y

Thanks to everyone who helped/had an input earlier :y much embarrassment at the time :-[

On the plus side, it didn't rain, and the car went off to its new home doorcard attached and pretty much intact :y

Bloody hell Al, the roads round your way like to tighten up on the exit don't they. ;D

A land of blind crests woth corners directly on the other side, tightening corners and cars in trees. Blue lights all over the place on the way back.

...and that camera flashed me., forward facing.

Re the mechanism, the guts of it had a plate pressed onto a short shaft. The shaft was turning, but not the plate that should have been attached to it. Plus there looked to be a part missing that activated the latch you can see on the door edge.

The door card was pulled back, the red/brown plastic guard over the mech. was removed, then blindly find the lever that lifts that the latch within the mechanism itself.

I always thought the top plastic strip on the door card coming loose so easy was a bit Micky on Vauxhalls behalf, as its only glued on to the card.

But if that was more solidly mounted we would have realy struggled to get the door card off at the top with the door closed.

Obviously a method to their madness :y the rest of the door card is actually pretty robust...
