Replacement car thoughts, continued.

Right, I've been out for a tour round the local used car dealers.  Most seem to sell overpriced motorised shopping trolleys, not proper cars.  But I did see something I liked at a very reasonable price.  So reasonable, in fact, that I wonder if I'm missing something important about it.

It's a V-reg Volvo V70 2.5 diesel automatic, no visible rust, excellent paintwork, immaculate inside, 121K, will come with 1 year MOT.  Cambelt has been done, which presumably means the same as it would for an Omega - an expensive frequently occurring problem already dealt with.  He only wants £1250 for it, and he'll give me £200 for mine. 

Looked on Autotrader, but prices differ wildly, as do mileages. 

Only negatives I can see are that it has those horrible black windows at the back, there's no cruise control, and I don't think it had a sun roof.  I know it's very old (but so am I), but it looks to be in very good nick for its age (unlike me).  The seller says he bought it off an old bloke.

Anybody know anything about these cars?

Forgot to say that the £200 for the Omega was what the dealer thought it would be worth when scrapped.  This was a surprise to me - I thought I'd have to pay to have it scrapped.  So I went to the local scrapyard, and asked what they'd give me for it, and they said £200.

Might be able to get more from selling the bits if I can find a suitable outlet... :)

From a dealer that sounds quite reasonable to me. However, remember that it's 14 years old, the same age as the car you're about to scrap.

Dilemma. :-\

With further thought, £1000 for the Volvo and £200 for your Omega seems closer to the mark. :y

Yeah!  Never was much of a boy racer, anyway.  But at least a Volvo will be fairly easy to park - borrowed a Toyota from the garage the other day, and it seemed to have about the same turning circle as a bus!  Always assuming I can see anything out the over-tinted windows, that is.

Whoops!  Took a while for the penny to drop!

The V70 is FWD.  Don't like FWD!  :( :( :(

But most cars are these days, except for the really expensive ones, so I'll probably have to learn some new driving skills whatever happens.  Think the Mondeo was FWD, but didn't like that for other reasons.

only merc or bmw do RWD  i think :-\ vx and everyone else do FWD because its cheaper as far as mass production goes ;)

Volvos have some nasty issues with the drive-by-wire throttles around this sort of mileage which will leave you in a similar position as you are with your ABS ECU, except you'll have the additional irritation of wrong-wheel-drive. ;)

Audi engine I recall and at that age its a rebadged 850?

Yep, avoid the petrols of that age.

Bah, what am I saying, avoid wwd full stop. Does limit options though. :(
