A Lexus isn't a bad call actually, they're RWD, nice kit, and cheap, reliable too.

Mrs Gixer has a Lexus is300 sport cross btw. Not is big for occupants as an omega. But as an Estate, its quicker and carries more than mine.

Rear suspension is a weeny bit willowy when pushing it, but ...

Ahem, it's not a GS so I'll shut up. ;D

I looked at a Merc today

My daily drive at the moment is a slightly battered 15 year old Merc C250 TD Estate with 166000 miles on the clock.  :)  In terms of trim levels and spec you are right as it's nothing special, but the quality shows in the way it drives and handles.  I can't imagine a similar aged Veccie or Mondeo being such a pleasure to drive!  :y

You have to watch out for the rot though...  :(

Volvos have some nasty issues with the drive-by-wire throttles around this sort of mileage which will leave you in a similar position as you are with your ABS ECU, except you'll have the additional irritation of wrong-wheel-drive. ;)

Petrol models  :y

Oh, it's a tractor. ::)

That's OK - I live in Suffolk - even the local football team drive tractors.

What about a Lexus GS 300  :-\

Cheapest Lexus automatic on Autotrader within 40 miles of here is £5k.  Manual £2k - more than I want to pay. It's an IS200 a which means absolutely nothing to me, but it doesn't look very big.

+1  ;) ... Although maybe not everyone, But the majority still have at least one Omega even though the youngest would be 10 years old and the majority of them will be well over 100k. Unless your lucky enough to get a 04 or 54 ex plod..  ::)

I've been spoilt with the Omega in terms of running costs, with LPG and DIY work its cheap as chips to run.

It makes any replacement car for the Omega very difficult choice, I'd love an A8 V8 TDi, but I'd have to kiss good-bye to DIY service work and hello to big garage bills.  :(

I think I would be very tempted to stay GM, maybe late Saab?

Looking at Monaro's last night, about as heavy as 3.2 Omega on fuel, but could be cheaper to run in terms of garage bills.

Do the do Trade club prices on Monaro disc/pads  ::)  ;D

The Volvo uses diesel juice - much cheaper.  Had a 960 once - on a good day. on a run, I'd get about 22mpg - needed it's own tanker.

I realise it's unusual to "quote" one's own post, but I was talking rubbish.  One of the reasons I've been away from this forum, and many other social environments, for a long time is that my memory can be unreliable at times.  For some really strange reason, I missed out the last 20 years, and momentarily reverted to the time I lived in the Netherlands, where diesel and LPG were half the price of petrol.  Don't understand why this happened - I drive past several garages every day, and fill up once a week, and I know perfectly well that diesel costs 3-4p a litre more than petrol.

My wife has indicated that exchanging one 14 year-old car for another 14 year-old car at a cost of £1000 is probably not a good idea.  Since she is the one with the income, I can only concur.  Bye-bye shiny green Volvo. :(  Looks like the Omega will be repaired, then, 'cos I didn't see any cars I liked the look of locally.

So what is the advantage of diesel?  Better consumption?

diesels, if used on long runs do get better mpg. Omega DTi can average 45mpg over the course of a tank, without too much trouble.

In town though, they can suffer, especially if autos, in that respect a small 1.2 petrol is what you want.

In reality it all depends on mileage you do, I'm looking at LPG'ing the 3.2, at a cost of around £700-850 approx. Instead of 22pence a mile, it will cost around 15p. (fuel running cost)

So instead of 27mpg at £1.35/L it will be 21mpg at £0.69L

Even so, will a 40% reduction there abouts in fuel costs, it will still take 10,000 miles approx for LPG to pay for itself.

So if you see a petrol car at £2k, then a diesel version at £2.8k, remember it takes quite a long time to claw back just a few hundred quid  :y

It's not often I disagree with the Master.... Although having met old long body/short legs, I have to say I have less head room issues in the Lexus than the omega elite with a sunroof. Both have electric seats which tend to sit higher due to the motors underneath and a sunroof which takes an inch of head room as well.

And while the is300 has its faults, there are far less faults than on an omega. FAR less. Me thinks Master has his Vauxhall tinted spectacles on again. ;D ;)

Although undoubtedly we'd be looking at a more expensive car in any Lexus now anyway on average. So on cost there STILL isn't anything more suitable than an omega.

It's a simple choice, buy a more expensive car or stick with the omega. We've been looking for as long as I've been a member for an omega replacement, and while there may be more desirable models, there are certainly none cheaper.

My next car will be a vxr8 going by the way the depreciating cars are feeding down to us. The Phaeton catches my eye, but then I'm happy with a saloon.

We're cirtain lay buggered for an Estete replacement for those that need them. ££££
