Many insects are attracted to dark blue colours hence why they've gathered on the Elite and not on the silver 2.2.  :) 

Also WD40 contains fish oils so if you've used it on the boot hinges recently?  ???  :-\

The only thing I put In that area recently was after a wash some liquid wax/sealer as in that AutoGlum picture to help the water run more freely   :-\

Turned out they had all died by the following morning just air duster'd them away, and haven't seen any since.. Maybe a one off freaky invasion  :o :D :D ;D
