Mobile air con units?
« on: 09 July 2013, 19:54:03 »

Our new office is unbelievably hot and try as we might we can't get any airflow through it at all. Everyone is screaming for fans but they will just mask the problem and move warm air about but they just  don't get it ::)

I have looked at some formulas and the room is approx 35 ft x 35 ft x 9 ft high and we were reccomended to hire 4x 4.5 kw units at £149 per week each  :o

I have come across these ex rental units that are 5 kw each and I am assured are fully gassed and tested before dispatch but in no way guaranteed, for £199 to buy.

Any air con experts out there who can advise if they are worth bothering with?

You're only gonna need em for a week  :)
If you've got storage space for the other 51 weeks of the year - buy, don't rent!
If they only last a week and a half, they've paid for themselves.
Plus whilstever they work, they have intrinsic value

There are some downsides to the mobile ones.

We had them in an office greenhouse in Leicester years back. You have to hang a part of them outside, so have to have a window open(we were next to the busy A47 so noisy as well) . They were so heavy only men could manouevre themin and out. At the end of the day every able bodied man vanished off home. They deposited lots of water everywhere. They took up floor space too.

If its for an office, put the money towards a proper A/C unit, rather than a portable unit.

The portables have a place, but not in a workplace.

Don't forget that the hot air needs to go somewhere. You normally need a duct by which hot air can be blown outside, and opening the window to dangle it out is self-defeating. ;)

Yeah turned out the units needed ducting so bought a mahoosive fan as a stopgap, at least the air flows a little. Got a price for fixed aircon ....  :o

Yes, got a quote to replace the one in our office, as apparently we have too much kit in there for the 4.5kw unit to remove.

£4k. ::)
