I'm to hot need the a/c to work
« on: 09 July 2013, 22:01:49 »

98 omega elite 3.0l the air con compressor has a leak from the rear, does anyone know if I can get a seal kit for these things or will I be shelling out mega bucks for a new compressor, the compressor is all working and good when gassed up but is leaking from the seal at the rear of the compressor. >:( thanks in advance andy.

Yes just change the seals.

But check the condensor condition as well. Most omega pumps seem to show green dye at some point it seems. Having not seen how bad your pump leak is, I guess its possible yours has green die evident, as they tend to, but the real failure could be the much more common condensor(thinner radiator in front of the thicker engine radiator) these get holed and disintegrate quite easily.

Condensor and drier(which should be changed at the same time) could cost £120 odd if you search around.

So worth checking that for dye on the condensor first to evaluate costs before bothering with the pump? :)

Only found 1 source off seals for the compressor, that was the states and he wouldnt send them to uk.
Also go to gen car chat and there's a thread there about a/c rebuild at the moment, and most of your questions will be answered there. :y

Well took one look at the compressor and decided, its to much of a pain in the bum to take it off and see if I could do anything with it, so just changed the condenser at the weekend and ordered a new pump, just waiting for it to arrive now then to flush the system. Oh joy :(

I've just changed my compressor on my 3.2, and with the bagpipes and rad out it is a very simple job. The 2 rear Torx bolts are easily accessible from beneath with a wobbly extension, (I didn't need to remove the left engine mount as has been suggested!) and the 3 larger front Torx bolts are readily accessible from above. Do not attempt to remove the pipes before removing the compressor. Just remove the 2 pipe clamping bolts, one on the head and one in the bay, to allow movement, and lift the compressor out forwards with the front end upwards and it will come out quite easily. You can now disconnect the mounting block through which the pipes are connected and replace your Dowty seals, £3.42+VAT for a pair on TC from VX, see RobG 's post above, then bolt the block back to 40Nm, and refit. It turned out to be a very easy job. Good luck.

I hope to do a how to soon. :y
