Disgraceful behaviour!
« on: 09 July 2013, 23:29:36 »

My thread "whats it worth"

http://www.omegaowners.com/forum/index.php?topic=116294.0;topicseen

Was not a for sale thread, it didnt say for sale and to be honest i never even considered that either as how the hell am i going to sell a car in this state? my choices as i see it are to weigh it in complete or break it for spares my self, apparently i can get £250 to £300 by some breakers who will even take it away for that.

The point of the thread was what do you guys think its worth in scrap value or parts as im guessing some of you may have been here before, if so what did you do and how did you get on? for admin and other members to just assume without even taking the time and effort to ask me first is, i think, bloody disgraceful, none of you know me so how dare you make that assumption!

It is possible that yours is an exception to the rule, but this type of thread is commonly a thinly disguised 'for sale' thread, created in an attempt to flaunt the post rules. These are removed asap.
Whilst you protest your innocence in this respect, poor past experiences now dictate how admins deal with these incidents, and although it is not personal, it is unfortunate, particularly in a genuine case.

But it wasnt a for sale thread!

But it did look like previous threads where people "have" posted as sales threads. Not that that would be clear, until yours was deleted. I guess?

There are good reasons, and bad reasons, why. It is frustrating though.

Trouble is. The more annoyed people come across, the more it "looks" like they're upset they can't sell the car. Historically anyway. :)

But then, there are some members who genuinely don't know how much their car is worth, but, better safe, it seems.

It's a bit strong calling it disgraceful behaviour, but hear me out....     it's a judgement call on the part of an admin to decide whether it's a thinly disguised attempt to circumvent the rules,  or not,....    and as you say, none of them actually know you, so , from their perspective,  best to err on the side of upholding the rules.... and although i didn't read it as a for sale thread,  i did ponder, much the same question.....

and ,  in the case of such things, typically,  judges decisions are final, and the judges make the rules, as they see fit...  they own the forum outright...    it is not a public free for all....   essentially, we, the public, have no "rights" to post what we want without interference....  such is the nature of ALL forums of it's type...

it's a rough old job being a forum admin.... you cannot please all the people all of the time, and inevitably some judgment calls are going to ruffle peoples feathers when they see things differently.....    I did it for ten years on a forum owned and hosted by a commercial publication  with (at time of leaving) over 80,000 individual registered users , in a field of human endeavour generally pursued by highly passionate people (music and audio engineering) .....  tempers often got frayed , and the forum management team got lambasted on occasion,  generally rather unfairly.....

in the end,  i retired after 10 years long and often unrewarding service.....

and i will never take on such a role again.....

you probably best hope the admin team here don't take the same view, as the forum is hosted on a server in one of their homes.....  it'll be   bye bye omega owners.com

I am extremely thankful that Hotel21,  TheBoy , MarkDTM , Jimbob, and others DO take the time, make the effort and keep the place running relatively smoothly ...

But i do sympathise to some extent,  were it me, i THINK i'd have made the call different,  but then,  it's easy to say that when you're not in the hot seat.....  and if i were,  maybe i would have made the same decision....

it's nothing personal against you......   they're just doing their jobs as best they can.... they ARE human (mostly;)   )

Agree with the above  :y

Think its more than a bit strong to post that it's "disgraceful behaviour" for an admin to delete a post that appears to flount forum rules.  Some may say that its "disgraceful behaviour" to post in such a way to appear to circumvent forum rules :-\

I read the thread,  I came to the conclusion that he wasn't actually trying to break the rules, and was genuinely , both dismayed at what happened to his Miggy, and slightly at a loss as to what to do next.....   and was genuinely looking for advice.....     it being rather an unusual state of play regarding the Miggy....

but , my evidence for that conclusion was both circumstantial , conjecture, and subjective....

so many others may have read it differently....

Oh stop with the dramatics, clearly looked like a sale thread. The 250 post limit was brought in to protect members, if you had bothered to read the rules you would know this.

As for "Disgraceful Behaviour"  ??? Seriously? A moderator gives up their spare time to make sure OOF is a great place?

Sadly they also have to deal with people like yourself  :(

So .. you ask "how much is it worth scrap" .. the simple answer is whatever the scrap yard weighs it at and gives you .. you can't barter, argue, or anything ... so OOF members cannot answer you as they don't own the scrapyard....

So .. asking the question gives the "perception" you are asking someone to buy it to break it ... disguised sale thread as stated.....

Moderators have enough work to do without having to explain decisions, we support them rather than castigate them as they work on our behalf at all times..... and they don't get anything for it ... (except hassle I guess :(  )

As pointed out, we do have a requirement for 250 posts before selling on this site, partly due to bad experiences with rogue sellers in the past and partly because we do not wish to provide an instant free alternative to ebay / auto trader for anyone who lands here. We do like to provide the for sale section for the use of those established members who genuinely contribute to the site, however.

One side effect of this is that we get inundated with requests from those who don't see why this rule should apply to them or simply can't be bothered to read the rules. When told that they require 250 posts their usual reaction is to try to post adverts elsewhere on the site, in various degrees of disguise. These take a lot of admin time to tidy up so, unfortunately, any post by a member without the required posts discussing disposal of an Omega tends to get binned. I can see there was some deliberation over your post rather than instant deletion, so clearly it was borderline.

I hope you are able to appreciate why we took the action we did.

Well what ever you lot "assumed" it wasnt a for sale thread, i wanted to know if anyone has had a similar experience and if so what was your outcome, did you decide to break it your self and over what time scale or just weight it in?
