I think even if you spend a few thousand on a car it will eventually need something replacing on it , wear and tare items .. usually the ball joints and bushes on every car  :( Exhausts , tyres ect ... It can soon add up especially when it all needs doing at once  >:( >:(

Ahh well back to the shopping list

The answer is easy ::)

Either buy nearly new low milage and get rid before 80k, or buy the highest mileage car you can find with a years ticket on it, getting shot when it needs anything more than fuel and servicing :y

Getting it all off egay , the shops cant compete with egay prices including free delivery for the same item .. some are the same price but then they add vat and it takes it over price  :( Sorry but local parts places just cant compete and ive rang loads ...

Beware of pattern parts failing sooner than OE though.

Given the faffing about changing a HBV I'd go OE every time ................ I know it's not difficult to change one, but I'd reckon it'd be cheaper & easier in the long run changing an OE valve at half the interval of a pattern valve  ;)

Its a lot easier to get to than the omega andy  ;) The bits ill be getting will be for the head gasket change once i fathom out what the problem is  :-\ 90% sure its valve stem seals so if it is the head has to come off anyway  ;)

Why, if you didn't want an omega due to cost and faults, did you go and buy a similar and reputably less reliable car, with similar parts to the one just sold?

Remember, Oof is in the fortunate poition only concentrate on one model of one manufacturers range of cars. Not all cars have a heater by pass valve. So a factors is even less likely to know (Andyc aside) than a Vx dealer parts man who. They often ask the same question when hearing the letters hbv, ime.

What are the odds of getting a genuine part from a factors though, would you say?

Or, it leads to reactions to simple questions that are pure dogma. Just mention HBV, oil, plugs or other simple service stuff, and it's like Captain Flint has got on the internet("pieces of genuine GM plugs"). The only reason I replaced the £9 HBV on my car with a genuine one was that I managed to snap the vacuum port off the top of it. That would have been even more annoying if I'd spent 4 times as much on it. Oh, and by then I had a spare genuine one on my hotrod engine that won't be needed.
