Secondary air injection . . .
« on: 18 July 2013, 22:08:08 »

Well, I've had no bother for a while, but now its all kicked off. Two weeks ago everything fine then a loud exhaust noise from passenger side of the engine.  :( Suspected the dreaded exhaust manifold gasket. Happy to find it was only a small rubber hose on the secondary air injection system at the front of the engine down near the air con pump.  :) Replaced it then five miles later the second one blew.  :( Replaced that and five miles later a further exhaust noise from under the passenger side manifold again.  >:(  Eight miles later finds that the first hose has blown again too.  :o  Exhaust noise intolerable+fumes in cabin.  :o
Pops into local garage to have it looked at. Diagnoses vague, suggests dissembly. However they are up to their eyeballs in work so will have to wait two weeks.  :(
Goes home and trawls t'internet. Upshot of all this is the secondary air injection valve in the manifold siezed open allowing exhaust gases to back-up through the system made worse by a blocked exhaust pipe.  :(

So, if anybody wants a 2000 Elite 2.5 in blue with cream leather, spares or repair, requiring a lot of work, pm me.
I'll put some more details in the proper section later.

End of tedious story . . . .and Omega ownership.  :'(
I'll put some

Why not just get rid of SAI?  Or am I missing something?

Sounds like the non-return valve in the SAI system has failed, allowing hot gases to reach the rubber hose.

As said, you might as well ditch the whole system. :y

If its the short 3" one, about 15mm in diameter, near A/C pump, it *may* be the exhaust is blocked/partially blocked that side.

Yes, I think you are bang on.    :y That means a whole new exhaust and passenger side exhaust manifold. It'll be a thousand pounder.  :o  Too dear for me.  :-\

No! Worst case it's a blocked cat, in which case a 2nd hand one will do nicely. Complete exhaust system can be had for £100. Then just block the SAI ports on the manifold and bin the rest of the system, leaving the relay driven by the ECU intact to avoid a fault code. :y

As Kevin Wood says, quality exhausts can be had for under £100, excl cats and manifold. We can advise once we know if cat or exhaust.

I'd replace both mid sections and backbox together, if it the silencer thats failed.

Exhausts for a £100 !!!  :o  Where's that from please?   I figured a complete exhaust would be £500 min!
I still have to find somebody to do the manifold though, my arthritis won't let me.  :(

The manifold fix is dead easy. Just remove the metal pipes leaving the rubber joints accessible.

Use a short length of 15mm copper pipe with a soldered on end-cap. Cut pipe to length so that the end cap is clear of the rubber by a couple of mm and does not foul anything. Then, secure in place with a suitable jubilee clip - or reuse the existing pipe clip.

Make sure you keep the electrical valve in place to trick the ECU, IIRC there is a vacuum pipe to seal off as well?

A dead easy and cheap removal job.

All done from memory from a few years ago .........

You can then remove the pump from up under the front n/s wing and save carting thet weight around.

Oh okay, cheers. The problem is a blocked exhaust to the point where damage has been done to the valve in the manifold, so that'll have to be changed.
I'm ok with the sai system, it was just in the wrong place when the exhaust kicked off.  :(
I would never have thought how much damage a blocked exhaust could do . . .until now. :(

When mine still had the 3.0L manifolds, I blocked the SAI pipes by just pushing the 15mm end-cap (solder-ring / yorkie) into the end of the rubber hose, goes in pretty easy blank-end first, then just secure using the original spring clip so it's exactly where the end-cap is.

Don't think the ECU notices/complains if you remove the solenoid - mine certainly hasn't.

It's still annoying though when your car breaks down before your holls.  >:(
