VW Golf brake discs
« on: 04 August 2013, 17:15:51 »

I have 'volunteered' to service a neighbour's 1.4 T reg Golf which needs new front discs and pads. ECP do Pagids at about £30, but looking at Buy Parts Buy they offer discs as low as £6.00 each, and various prices upwards. As neighbour is boracic, I would like to keep the costs down. Has anyone any experience of  the cheapo discs from BPB? :-\

Surely brakes are one area that you should not scrimp one?

Agreed, I was interested in any experience with these. They are so cheap that I would not fit them, and my OP was really me thinking aloud. How can they make and sell these at that price, and has anyone ever tried them - someone will have, otherwise they wouldn't bother to sell them. I know that there are a lot of 'Dealer' fakes out there, but these are not sold as OE. :y

On the other hand, all brake parts have to meet ECE90 regs now, so I'd be very surprised to find anything seriously sub-standard on the market.

Frankly, if your neighbour isn't that demanding of them, they'll probably be fine.

How about using the cheaper discs with reasonably priced, branded pads? As it's the pad that makes the real difference in braking ability and longevity.

Bought a set of Pagid discounted down to £18 each from my mate at Euro CP, with a free can of brake cleaner thrown in! :y

Can't argue with that deal :y

Assuming the cheapest discs can manage 5000 miles, changing them every 4-6 months is hardly going to brake (boom, boom ::)) the bank :y
