Another towbar wiring question
« on: 06 August 2013, 20:13:29 »

Took my car to an auto-electricians today to see about getting electrics fitted to my towbar for a spot of caravanning.

Guy seems to think because the omega`s have the bulb warning notifications on the on board computer , I might need to buy a genuine kit from Vauxhall.
Is this true or can he do it easily enough ? and if so how can it be done ?
Ive seen some people saying to use the supplied connector in the boot , others saying not to ,   peoples breake lights not working etc etc

Its a 2002 2.6 Elite Auto if that helps

Use a 7 way bypass relay and it won't affect the bulb failure module,an auto electrician should know this :-\

You don't even need the by-pass relay. Just wire it direct to what's already there.

If you want to extend the brake check to your trailer, there's another relay that's fitted up front you can fit (search OOF via Google) ...... most don't bother.

Depends what's fitted to the caravan.
If your caravan has a black (12N) & a grey (12S) plug, then yes. If it's a new caravan, it'll have just one 13 pin plug.  :y :y

Thinking out loud... When fitting the black and grey plugs to a car for the first time, is it feasible to fit a 13pin plug instead :-/

The 13 pin is the better system, but then you'd need to either alter the caravan or use an adapter - & then you don't gain anything, apart from a cable that then trails on the ground. ;-)

I see have Elite have got reverse parking sensors? And if so how do you stop them screaming at you as you reverse with a caravan on?

There are relays for switching them off. My Merc has an off switch for the sensors, but in reality I've rarely had need to turn them off ...... how often are you actually going backwards when the caravan is on the back?  ;) ;)

When I enter maneuvering competitions with the caravan club, I simply unplug the speaker, there is a plug/socket on the cable from the control box, very easy access if you re-route the cable slightly, otherwise simply remove the spare wheel to access the plug/socket.

Otherwise I put up with the noise as its only for a very short while normally.
