15/20 mins practice with either a MIG or stick set (MMA) will have you welding to a degree. Gas (oxy/acetylene) or TIG needs a bit more practice though. Different welding options have their own applications  :y

Just been to my mum & dads whilst they're away on hols to steal borrow on a long term basis my dads welder & have a play. Not used one for ages so it'll be fun. Its brand new never been out of the box & I doubt me dad will ever use it due to his condition now what with having Dementia.

Sounds awful but I'm slowly removing items from his garage (with mums blessing) that he used to use for fear of him doing himself some real damage. Poor owd fella hasn't a clue any more & nearly set himself on fire recently  ::) :'( But went up like a bottle o' pop when I suggested its time he stopped tinkering.

Really sorry to hear that. Being a tinkerer myself, I really can't imagine a day when I'll just have to sit in front of the TV of an evening. :(

Really don't know what we're gonna do with him, he had a major stroke 2 years ago, now diagnosed with this  :( and he's startin to affect my mums health now with all the running around she has to do. She broke her wrist recently after a fall, don't know how it happened she won't say, but i'm sure she were doin sommat she shouldn't be.

Dads been a tinkerer all his life, seen him strip engines & re-build and he was an autobox specialist - what he didn't know about em wasn't worth knowin. Nowadays when I visit he sometimes doesn't know who I am, can hardly walk & just sits in his chair.  :( :( Can't believe the difference in a couple of years.

I have the greatest respect for anyone who can get their head around an auto gearbox. I've stripped one in the past - note stripped, not rebuilt, then just looked at innards of the valve block with a puzzled look on my face.

I had a brand new welder in the shed for over a year then sold it  :( I had planned on welding the Herald , but on investigation the herald was too far gone  :-[ So never got to practice or more like blow bigger holes in it  ;D

I must admit that I bought a cheap arc welder a few years ago and the results have been a bit hit and miss. I think I need more practice.  ???

It'll depend on the thickness of the steel you're welding & how much of that steel was oxidised steel  ;)
