Are you sure the gear selector is clean and working?

the honest answer is no so tomorrow's job's are to remove the speed sensor from my car and see if I cures the fault in robs car first then if that don't work try the selector from my car,
basically using my car as all is working well on mine

today's update

output speed sensor removed from my car and swaped over to rob's no better.
gear selector checked and set correctly, no better.

so tonight started from scratch after a conversation with elite pete started by removing slush box sump to check if thrust washer was in bits in the bottom, and removed other sump to clean the filter the garage said they had already done this is what we found in the bottom of both sump's

at first i thought i was old gasket but it seams to be magnetic can some one please tell me what this is ?

It looks like sections of sump gasket to me but i'm stumped because there are no bolt holes in it and it all looks curved :-\

Looks like either one or more brake bands or clutch linings ?? - not good whichever - as magnetic I'd think more likely to be the brake bands as they are usually steel  :(

it has got me stumped it's definitely paper of some type I think the magnetic bit is actually the fact the were near the magnet in the sump so covered in atf and fine metal. picked up a selector switch today from omegod so that's the next step

its hard to get any sign of scale /size from the pics,ie what dia would the bits approximate too?ps there is only one brake band at the rear of the box :y.does the gearbox work normally at low speed,?ie 1,2,3 but throws a wobbly when it does into 4/lockup?

I have changed the selector switch tonight what a pig of a job I will put the two sumps back on and refill tomorrow then with fingers crossed give it a try.
I have keep a few bits so will take a photo with a tape measure next to it to get an idea of scale.
it works in all gears until it decides to go in to neutral then nothing in any gear until turned off and restarted
