Not the greatest of photos I know but I have taken fine emery cloth and gone over it to get it smooth and then wiped it over with brake clean. is this what it should look like or should I be seeing my face in it? I didn't want to go too mad as I don't want to start making high and low points. And I don't really have the means to machine it.

Your thoughts?

ps I haven't touched the valves or combustion chamber area.... im presuming I can leave this alone?

Sorry, didn't get chance to reply to your PM.

Get a block of wood and get some wet and dry wrapped around it and work the cylinder head with it a bit further to minimise the pitting around the coolant passages (signs of poor coolant maitenance there in a dim and distant past). You can actualy apply a small wipe of the green sealent (as used on the front cam caps) in this corrosion area before fitting the head to help seal it.

The wooden block trick also works well on the block faces and the oil cooler face (worth re-sealing whilst the heads are off)

The main things is where the fire rings on the gasket sit,any pitting there isn't good but as Mark says use a bit of sealant where the cooling passages are

Thanks guys - I don't mind giving it a bit more elbow grease now especially with the block of wood trick. ive only got medium and fine emery. so ill use the medium and finish off with the fine, both using a block.

got to the other head and i'm  a little concerned. heres the pic and thers two pitted areas (arrowed).


I only have the black sealant.will this be acceptable?

No, you need the green sealant (which you will need anyway for the cam caps), the area shown is part of the coolant way so not an issue (look at the opposite surface on the block face)

right lads, this is the final clean up. I haven't got green sealant yet but I will as need it anyway as mark pointed out. just the block next.

Looking much better, the block of wood and wet and dry works well and makes life a lot easier when cleaning such things up.

Got a straight edge and feelers from college too so going to run that over as well.

Still a little concerned re the head on the left in that pic. The bottom most cylinder's water jacket has what you can just make out in the photo a little bit of corrosion but it's as if its been slightly eaten away. is this another place to put the green sealant? Sorry for getting confused on this but obviously just wan to make sure I don't nausea it up
