Recently had the same thing on a friends laptop.Wouldn't install or update.Turned out to be a simple fix.Check the date and time. If these are wrong it can cause problems.

Talking of the above I do have to press the f1 key every time i turn on the computer. It states that the battery on the board is dead. Would this really cause my problem, if so how would i change this.

if the battery is dead on the mother board the bios will revert back to  a wrong date and time as the battery supplies the power to hold information in the bios memory when pc is switched off. normally fairly easy to replace if you look on the motherboard look for a big button size battery looks similar to battery in your key fob. get the model number and buy a replacement and change them. once changed when the pc starts up go into bios and set date and time and then this will then not be needed to be done again for a few years probably longer than you will lkeep the pc

Whilst the useless student is still localish to you, ask him to rebuild it. If the CMOS battery is shafted, I guess its old, probably not worth the effort to replace that battery.

On the plus side it proves that it is capable of connecting to the internet & downloading :)

On the negative side it shows that there is something wrong with the IE setup. Internet Explorer is intimately connected with the inner workings of Windoze so I would strongly recommend that you don't let it connect to the internet until you have fixed it. Definitely don't use it for internet banking or eBay purchases.

I haven't got the patience to nurse sick Microsoft systems any more so I would wipe it & stick Linux on it but if you don't want to do that then at least listen to the bods who DO still have a lingering attachment to Redmond. Rebuild it (ie wipe it and re-install Windows).
Rebuild it
