Fascinating, no?

On sky sports now as it happens. But I saw another programme talking about these boats "making their own wind" as they're so fast.  ???

Very helpful graphics, good commentary and explanation of the forces involved, and a good impression of speed.

These things are huge, and obviously, quick.  :o

I crew on a racing yacht for the RORC, basically I am the muscle and ballast so most of the time I am pulling halyards (ropes) or leaning out over the water.

The last race I was in we were on the wind angle and speed limit for the rather large sails we had up at the time.  The speed display only went up to 17 knots after which it went blank.  I was the ballast on the rear corner leaning out over water which was 2 feet away from my face going past me at 17+ knots.........oh and it was dark, there was no moon and 1am.

It was only when the helmsman said that if we hit a lobster pot we may flip over (and very quickly) that I realised how far out of my comfort zone I was.

Loved it though :y

There's been hardly any coverage of it. I had to search the BBC website's sport section the other day to see what's happening.....  :(

Mind you I do live in a cave, so have no TV let alone Sky....  ;)

They were showing some of the Sky footage at the Boatshow. 41knots, at a separation of about 10feet is pretty ballsy stuff 8)

The US Army scale model of San Fransisco Bay is neat as well. Shows just how seriously they took people escaping from Alcatraz :o

I'm not sure if the coverage showed just how physical it is to crew one of these boats.  I come away from a day's sailing with more bruises and more tired than any rugby match I have played.  Watching big boats 10ft away from each other is not uncommon, in fact it is a good tactic of stealing wind.  Watching a smaller boat from another class (say a 30fter) quite rightly shout 'starboard' while rounding a mark and aiming at a 60fter, that's fun ;D

Had a "team building" day sailing in the solent a while back. Fortunately, got onto one of the boats with a competitive skipper and we put together a crew who didn't start bleating at the first sign of rain. ::) Base called us up to cancel the day just as we got out of the harbour. Skipper: "Did I hear the radio then?" "Nope. Didn't think so." "Click" "Look! it's turned off, so can't have been" and off we went. ;D

We had a good jousting with a few other boats. Thought the boat chasing us was going to take the rudder off at one point, but they didn't, and we managed to keep them at the rudder end of our boat!

Was a damned good day out, and something I think I could happily take to if I didn't do Gliding, Amateur radio, Home brewing, etc.. ::)

Money money money though. :-\

It's funny how Team oracles fortunes turned 180degrees at the inclusion of one team member, Ben Ainsley. Ok, proven record, medal winner, and a Phsycotic competitive spirit. But one man? Team dynamics are a funny thing. Tottenham on the other hand, have apparently SOLD thier talisman in Gareth Bail, but instead of sinking have gon on to improve so far.

All the money, all the tech. means little if there's no team.

On a boat I'd probably be ok as long as I stay in sight of a horizon. Loose that, below decks etc, oh dear. :-[

I love how these boats fly over the water, with just the keel boards (or whatever they are called on these catamarans!) in the water, just!

They are just giant wings, which I assume use the same science as any aircraft; high pressure under the boards, low above.

The nearest you can get to fly when sailing 8) 8) 8) 8) :y :y
