...30mb connection. Fine in the day, 24-25mbps.

Evenings 2-4mbps tops. Acceptable?

Virgin don't guarantee a minimum speed via wifi.

How to prove to call centre staff that its not our end...?

Not the norm and not acceptable - 24 to 25M on a VM 30M fibre connection is not great.

The proof they will accept is to switch off wifi and connect directly to VM router with just 1 device.

You then need to run speed tests to lots of different servers. If you get consistent slow results it's local congestion if you get very different results on different servers it could be further along the connection chain.

I have A VM connection here and it delivers 30M almost completely consistently.

Further investigation suggests shite wifi strength. Hold the device near the box and instantly get wAmo speeds of 30odd meg.

Virgin media super hub. We're sat downstairs and the hub is upstairs, hence in the evenings we get poor service, unless we're upstairs/nearer the hub.

Must say that's shite wifi signal. I was down the garden on our bench relaxing after garage work with a beer and a bit of oof, and couldn't see the hub at all on wifi, where as before I could see the sky and O2 boxs no problem at all.

Any solution? Or shall I just buy a decent wifi router?

You might well find you have a neighbour on the same Wi-Fi channel, or an adjacent one. It's not normally that bad, although your router could be sh1te.

After years of playing with isp wifi routers I gave up and bought a netgear Acess Point for £30.  Now the signal in the entire house is fantastic.  It really makes a difference.

When I get into the new house I will be wiring every room through a Cisco switch setup up with 2-3 VLANs.  The idea is that I get a router and practice my CCNA stuff when not doin much network stuff at work.  Everything is ready to go, just need the bloody house now ;D

You could try changing from 2.4 to 5 if you have devices that support that.

Or ask VM to send you a new router - it could nuts be faulty.

Seems the hub has an auto setting on wifi ports, which cycles through the least interrupted channels each time its re booted, to give the best channel given the surrounding routers.

So I guess its just poor wifi signal strength. :(

make sure you are on 144 not 300 on the speed settings (it makes the range better) also download Inssider from http://www.metageek.net/support/downloads/ to see if you get crossover on the channel which can also affect speeds

also a full reset of the modem helps, press and hold the reset button with a toothpick for 30 seconds, you will need to reset your password and SSID but that is easy, login is user: admin and password: changeme from http://192.168.0.1/VmLogin.asp :y

The 5 GHz band is less busy, but currently has 2 downsides:

Penetration is poor, so make sure you can get it everywhere in the house you want to.
Not all devices support 5GHz, most are 2.4GHz only.

If you do have to switch back to 2.4GHz, don't rely on the router's selection of channel - scan the area, and see what channels have the weakest signal on, and hard set it to that.

*Note: Don't know if VM's hub can do both 5 and 2.4GHz at same time, had a feeling it can't, but if it can..... :)

Yes here iphone4s can't see the virgin wifi now. All other devices are fine, although I had to re pair the sky box which is now happy.

Her lappy, my iPhone 5 and ipad are all happy.

And yes I see where your going with dual ghz options, as I guess that effectively gives two networks from one router?

Sadly, it is not capable of both :(

So should it be giving better signal strength on 2.5ghz? ...if so it sounds faulty to me. :(
