Winter tyre imports
« on: 03 October 2013, 10:42:57 »

Having done a bit of research, I decided to order a pair of Bridgestone winter tyres. I was surprised to be told by Camskill that no-one imports the ones I wanted to the UK because they are: and I quote "winter tyres", ??? ??? ??? and therefore if you damaged the tyre, you would have to buy a new one abroad. As Mytyres will deliver here anyway, this seems an odd position for UK suppliers to take, the implication being that no winter tyres are sold by UK suppliers!. ??? ??? ???

Thanks Al, BC are usually more expensive. The ones I fancied are Bridgestone Blizzak LM32 in 225 55 16, I can get them delivered for £95 from Mytyres, I'm just surprised at the suggestion that UK suppliers will not import them.:y

IIRC studded tyres are illegal for uk road use ::)

Only if used in "unsuitable conditions" and are seen to cause damage to the carriageway.. so if everywhere is thick sheet ice or compacted snow with no road showing..

Wait, this is England not Finland, isn't it.. ;D Yeah, essentially illegal..

I've got Dunlop Winter Sport 3D's which I purchased for a Winter drive to Austria, must say I was extremely impressed with them.

This is their tyre:

I drove through slush at motorway speeds, tracked pulled really well. Also thick snow in a hotel car park, normally would have been all over the shot, but just pulled and pulled. Also attempted an emergency stop, very impressive.

Do we get enough snow to purchase them on their own? Not really, I got them for Europe. But now I've got them, think they will be damn handy.

MPG took a hit though (as to be expected), around 10%  :(

Blizzak LM32 are rated good in the wet, which appeals to me.

The UG8s are excellent in the wet (in the 15" sizes on my car, at least) - although I imagine there's a price difference to factor in; they were far from cheap (but the only thing I could get at the time).
