Hello, sorry for creating another thread as I did not get any replies, I'm about to order a cam sensor but not sure on what type.

The car is a Omega W reg 2.0L 16V Manual GLS

Does the cam sensor connector plug have square or rounded corners on my car? How do I check this as I can't remove the cam cover myself without removing the belts and I'll probably cause more damage. I really don't want to get this wrong just in case of the mechanic opening everything up only to find that I've provided him with the wrong part.


If the type of connector cannot be ascertained by the model, how can I check this without dismantling everything?

You do not need to remove the cam belt cover to solve the round or square corner plug question. All you need to do is remove the plate labelled ECOTECH that covers the plugs, after removing the two screws. The cam sensor lead plugs into the sensor at the front of the slot thus revealed. Using a torch. work out how the plastic clip works, release it with a screwdriver, and pull the lead off the sensor. Then you can see whether the plug and socket are round or square. When satisfied you can easily push it back on again.

A VX dealer should be able to provide the correct sensor from the VIN/chassis number.

Not much point in fitting a pattern cam sensor as they usually cause trouble so best advice is to get the sensor from a VX dealer.

Today was possibly the worst day of my life. I decided to check the cam sensor and did not have a screwdriver to hand. I decided to use my one and only car key (lost the other one) and use that to prise the sensor up. It did come off and I have the rounded corner version only for me to find that I had snapped the metal part of the key and it fell through the hole where the cam sensor is. The car is on double yellow lines and no doubt by tomorrow morning the warden will probably have attached many many tickets on it.

Went to the key cutting shop who said they would need to order a new one which would take over a week and would be very expensive. If I find the bit they can make a copy and attach it to the keyfob.

I will now have to get someone out to take apart the cam cover/belt to retrieve the key, don't know if its even possible and don't know which nook it has managed to get into. I now have to take off the belt/cam cover not only for they but also for the cam sensor fitting. Can't get to a garage either.

I do not deserve to be in ownership of a car. My stupidity never ceases to amaze me. This is the second time I've broken something (the wipers first) and I am so annoyed with myself. The car hates me and I feel like crying.

I think sometimes its cheaper to get the right tool for the job,and to be honest,why use the only key for the car you have as a lever/screwdriver,it will and has ended in a problem,only good thing is you know what sensor you need,now go and get a telescopic magnet tool,and recover the bit of the key,atleast you can then get a new blade cut asap
Change your location from uk to where you are,there could be a member near you that may be able to assist.

How do I fix the key? I'm no where near a garage.

I have the immobilizer key fob bit which is the most important. Is there any way of getting a diagram or code number so the locksmith can cut a new key?

Is there any way of hotwiring it? Can I push start it? I don't think getting a tow off my dad would work as the steering wheel would lock without the key.

Easiest solution.ask the breakers on here to send you a lock set and petrol cap,its going to be quicker to change locks than to wait weeks for new key.

The telescopic magnet is a good idea but I think the key has further fallen. I could see it through the hole but when I shut the bonnet, opened it up again the key had gone. Does anyone know if it can fall through the cam belt bit right to the bottom? The magnet on maplins bay be a little big to fit through the whole and if it does I think the cam sensor may need to be prised further to make it fit (oh the irony)

If not I'll take a hack saw and remove a big chunk of the plastic cam cover. Anything is better than spending £££ on new key/locks
