Buy wine! world shortage forecast

World faces a global shortage. Are those Rods2's cellar photos?

I am not surprised as we have seen vines in Spain pulled out and replaced by other crops that maybe attract a better EU subsidy. same thing is happening with asparagus and wheat being replaced by olive trees.

It's not me honest.  ::)

PR story to push up the price of wine IMO. New world is continuing to increase production. the problem with command economies like the EU CAP is you either have surpluses or shortages as the people making the decisions are expected to be all seeing and all knowing, which is impossible of course, whereas with capitalism, the investment is made where the money goes.

The other day I purchased 24 bottles of First Cape limited reserve merlot from Sainsbury

Supposedly £7.48 a bottle, it was half price at £3.74.

Figure in a further 25% reduction when you buy six or more bottles and a £6 voucher because I spent over £60 and it's a significant saving. :y

So.....24 x £3.74 equals...£89.76

Less 25%......................£22.44

Less £6 voucher.............£6.00

Total............................£61.32

Which if you divide by 24 comes to.........£2.55 a bottle.

Okay, it may be 'plonk' but it's 13.0% Vol plonk and fine for my unsophisticated palate. :y :y

I go here . .

http://www.calaiswine.co.uk/

Cross channel on Eurotunnel, around £60 but sometimes less ( occasional midweek daytrip deals at £23 return !)

Home to Calais and back about 200 miles, say £50 or so petrol

100 bottles drinkable wine (one reason for having an Omega Estate!) at £2 per bottle = £200

Total spend £310

So £3.10 per bottle but much less as you buy more, plus a day out in France shopping for horsemeat in Auchan supermarket or wherever

I do also tend to buy a few cases of slightly more expensive stuff

One thing I don't know is the cost of a private liver transplant  :o

I suspect a reporter has just bought a majority share in a vineyard somewhere, last time I looked there was still plenty of wine.  The problem is finding the decent years/regions most of which have been snaffled up and kept in storage.  For example a 2003 bordeaux is now very tough to find.
