A bit of a Prang - help required.
« on: 31 October 2013, 18:15:45 »

Hi,
Had a prang with a Slovakian 44 tonner a week ago in my Omega Elite 3.0 Y reg. Damage to OSF and OSR doors. I've got the ABS Welsh Taffia on the job of repairing it, but I've got a few issues that perhaps someone can help with, basically all the result of school boy errors.

1) After the accident I wound down the drivers door window. Of course - it then wouldn't go back up. It closes about threequaters of the way then hits something hard and the anti-chop-off-your-fingers thing cuts in and winds it down again. I *think* it's hitting part of the door handle, so plan A was to take the doorcard off to take a butchers. That was till school boy error number 2 occurred.

2) After the accident I continued to where I was going - a top secret military base in Lincolnshire. At the main gate I locked the doors (even though the window was half open!) whilst I signed in. Then of course I couldn't get the drivers door to unlock. The lock buttons all pop up, but the drivers door will not open. It did open perfectly normally before I locked it. So now I can't get the door card off to do anything. Worse, I can't get the paint colour code because that's apparently on a sticker in the drivers door shut.

So, before I take an angle grinder to the door skin - does anyone have any ideas on how to unlock an accident damaged drivers door without resorting to butchery? I can see down inside the door through the window gap so if I know what to loop some string around I can perhaps yank it hard enough to open the lock.

Cheers

Ignition on, drop the window and have another go :y

Just tried that - no different.

If I unlock the car with the radio remote, or the key in the door lock, or by pulling the door pip up, the behaviour is the same. All 4 doors unlock, and then about one second later all 4 doors lock again. I can manually hold the door pip up and it will stay up though. I've tried leaning on the door with various forces to try and relieve the load on the catch, but it's still the same. Tried it with ignition off, ignition on, engine running, window up (as far as it'll go), window down and all combinations thereof. All no go. Won't open with either internal or external door handle.

I'm contemplating taking the passenger door card off to see how the lock mechanism works  - good idea or not?

Ok. Resorted to type. Cold steel chizel and the lump hammer down the window slot. Managed to dislodge the external handle opening rods, and it then opened with the internal door handle. They don't like it up-em captain, they don't like it up-em.  :)

Door card off and reveals that its the two external door handle fixing screws that are fouling the slider-bar on the bottom of the window. So off with the door handle, and the window now shuts.  And the paint code is Z385.

So all sorted for now. Cheers.

Unbelievable.

I looked in my shed and found I had a brand new rear omega door shell. I don't remember buying it, but there it was so seemed a shame not to use it. It is a pre facelift door but I was told the difference was just in the way the outside trim is fitted. So I've had the door painted, (together with a second had front door) and tonight I collected everything and started fitting them to the car. What could possibly go wrong  :o

Well it turns out there are other differences. There is something different about the hinges, and this means you can't fully open the rear door. And worse, the hole where the wiring loom from the B pillar enters the door is significantly smaller, and you can't even get the wiring plugs through the aperture.

I'm not sure what wiring loom is in the front doors. My car has the Bose sound system and the speaker in the second hand front door isn't. So I think to be on the safe side I'm going to change the front door looms over.

Anyway, i've retired for the night before i start throwing things around the garage in anger, and damaging my new paint.
