I have finally got my 2.5 Elite back on the road tonight complete with 6 month's tax and a replacement engine. It was noticeable however, having taken the car for a 20 mile run up and down a dual carriageway and a bit around town, that the temp gauge never moved off the minimum marker. There was plenty of warm air coming through the heater so maybe it's not the thermostat?

I had a similar situation on my old V6 and it turned out to also be the Thermostat

Could the temp gauge sender unit be faulty? Also, what are the dangers of running the car whilst in this condition?

Failing stats are common on migs. Certainly, like Paul,  this is my experience.
Not sure about the sender, but someone else may have encountered that particular issue.
I still think stat, but has it recently been replaced at the rebuild?

Check the brass connector is still attached on coolant bridge, even lazy stat should open a bit. But run coolish (75/80)

Not sure what happened to be honest. I'm assuming they just dropped the replacement lock, stock and barrel. The original engine always ran fine temperature wise.

As Tunnie says check temp gauge still connected - lead is easy to knock off connector.  Can be reconnected, I'm told, without removing anything if you've got tiny hands - removing the scuttle will give more room
