Lap top with 1.92 gb of space
« on: 08 November 2013, 01:41:41 »

... Oh rather sigh...  >:( useless poxy thing is so rammed full its seized up.

I've cleaned the disc, removed some stuff I know isn't important. But there's shed loads of stuff in add and remove that I have no idea what its for. ::)

It's currently compressing the disc, showing 8 hours to complete.

The heat this thing puts out is quite incredible. Its on a tray, on my lap, and it's physically impossible to leave it their for more than 30 secs.

Dell Inspiron 510m running xp and a thermo nuclear core that's about to melt through the centre of the earth.

Hold on, it's gone up. 10hours to complete. HTF can it go up?

This has to be the slowest pc in history. I only want to open iTunes. 10mins to open, 5 mins to close all the pop update pop ups, 2 hours pidding about cleaning and de fragging disc. 12 hours to compress files.

....and will it work once done? I doubt it.

How do I know I'm not deleting important stuff in add and remove to make room?

;) You dont say what OS you ar running but in most Windows versions try running msconfig to see what programs are running under start
header and close all unwanted ones to see if that speeds things along worked for me a few times ,ps can supply heat resistant Kevlar knee pads if the radiation burns get to bad !!

have you removed the back to see whether its filled up with crud in the cpu cooling fins, also it may be worth taking the heatsink off the cpu and cleaning off the old thermal paste and replacing it with new thermal paste, hopefully better quality than dell supply !

Add/Remove programs just deletes installed software, it doesn't go anywhere near your personal data.

From your description of the laptop, the quickest fix is going to be a format and clean install of the OS along with a general clean up of the internals (fan, etc)........drop it round if you want and I'll quite happily sort it for you.

If you instal/remove programs fairly regular as I do, I reformat my HDD every 6-12months.

It does make the laptop run quick again for a while...until I start installing/removing programs again  ::) ;D ;D

To save a lot of grief, after reformatting, I split my HDD into 2 drives. All programs go to C drive, all my personal stuff on D drive and as well as backed up elsewhere.  Then when you reformat, it only affects C drive not D drive. When its all finished, your personal stuff on D drive is still there as you left it!

Agreed. Compressing the disk won't help the speed of the thing either.  :y

However the data access times will have doubled at least due to the fact the data has to be decompressed when you want it.

Thats really not a good idea, especially if you plan to keep using the machine like that, take it you have run CCleaner, if so, list your files by Size and start deleting what you dont need anymore, any space left on D:, if yes move some stand alone files over to it.

The machine is unusable anyway. It's seized solid. There's isn't room to open iTunes. I've already deleted some stuff, but no idea if we need;
Ms office pro 2003      735.00mb
iTunes                        214,00mb
Ms service pack 2.      184.00 mb
Ms service pack 3.      179.00 mb
Adobe reader.             172.00mb
Java 2.                       136.00mb
Compatibility pack for 2007 office system 132.00mb

All the rest bar 2 are under 100mb.

So where do I find the rest....? :(

Get rid of large Files before you start unistalling programs, good place to start is music, videos and photos or images that you dont need. Search each category or search using wildcards, ie, *.wav, *.mp3, *.avi, *.mp4, *.jpg or jpeg, *.bmp, *.clp, *.gif etc,

another good place is in the Downloads Folder(s), delete any downloaded files or programs in there that you dont need.

Delete Temp or Leftovers Files, *.tmp, *,bak, *.old, *.001, 002 etc, *.log, *.chk

theres more but try above first.  ;)
