Apples Air drop.
« on: 26 November 2013, 08:37:09 »

Anyone used this?

I have upgraded to 7 but she hasn't. So I can't test Air drop to see if its worth her upgrading. ::)

Does it work? (I would hope anything can be sent, from pics to notes to contacts?)
How does it work? ( presume pairing with another device blu tooth style?)
What can you send ( guessing apple balk at paid content like songs ;D )

I've used it a few times - it's quite clever in that it creates the connection by using Bluetooth but then automatically creates an ad-hoc wifi connection so it's very fast :)

**not sure about what models - it works on my 5

Sounds quite similar to Fast File Transfer on Android, which works by turning the phone in to a web server to share files with other devices (including Apple).
Apple have limited what you can share (as per usual), and it is also limited to sharing with other Apple devices only.
The supported devices are:

iPhone 5,
iPad Touch (5th Gen),
iPad (4th Gen)
iPad mini

Fast File Transfer will send any type of file to ANY device, maybe someone needs to write an app for Apple that will do the same thing (although I doubt for one minute Apple would allow it on their store).

In all honesty I don't think apple customers see the need, as they mostly think apple invented the smart phone, not just a poor copy of one (which doesn't crash admittedly). Its funny what we get used to.

Only now is the iPhone just starting to approach true smartphone functionality. IMO. In that apps truly interact with one another and create a whole device that's smart, rather than the one smart app at a time of earlier models/versions.
It takes very little to link it altogether, and things like air drop and checking multiple items, are part of that. Something that's been entirely missing up to now.

Bloody Apple arrogance. ::)
