Suspension creak diagnosed
« on: 04 December 2013, 16:10:08 »

Hi guys,

Had a bag of time after college today to get to all the suspension checks done to find out where this creaking's coming from.

All 4 springs good
All drop links - no play or noise at all with it jacked up (I pulled the ARB right next to the drop link in a vertical way... nothing!
ARB - nothing
Wishbone ball joints - no movement at all (with car on't ground as I drove it on the drive)
no play from moving all wheels at 12/6 and 9/3
Donut bushes - tried pushing inwards (side to side) on the big rubber bump things and no movement
Exhaust moved about - no noise

so scratching my head thinking wtf

i hose down the front wishbone bushes, anti roll bar bushes and donut bushes with silicone spray. take it out to the place with all the speed bumps and noise has gone. even took them at 25 and just a normal sound as opposed to the creaking ive been getting.

So....

Front WB bushes (and ill do ARB bushes while I'm there as apparently they're easy)
Donut bushes...can you get poly versions of these?

only other thing of note is that there is some ''stuff'' on the rear O/S damper.... looks like dirt mixed with oil that's kinda dry-ish. presuming this is failing but i cleaned it off and will recheck in a few weeks as its not giving me any noise or problems... or at least i don't think so  :)

Yes you can get poly doughnuts. That's what the group buy was about late last year.  :y Are they any good.......... I don't know as mine are still on a shelf in the garage.  :)

Shock absorbers tend to leak a 'mist' of oil as they get tired.

I remember as I was there watching them work on it, on the Open Day at MK.  :y

My wishbone front poly bushes creaked like a barsteward until I re-greased them so probably similar with your rubber bushes.

I didn't mean it like that, I just meant that I remembered seeing you there.  ;D ;D :y

Mr Gixer's the doughnut man, best to ask him how hard it is.  :y

I hate Christmas smileys, I can't get my point across in the same manner as the standard smileys.  ;D ;D

Front bush poly's come as a pack of two, ie 4 halves, so you only need to order one pack.  :y

Checking the joints with the cars weight on the won't tell you anything...

It's a bit like putting your hand in a press and wondering why you can't move your fingers ::)

Get the car up in the air, wheels off and get a pry bar into all the suspension joints :y

(that thumbs up smiley is irritatingly gay...)

Sorry if I didn't make it clear  :-[

the only things I checked with car on ground was the WB ball joints as per CG's recommendation.

Everything else was checked with car on axle stands with a massive screw driver pry bar  :y :y :y :y

Take the wishbones into college... the bushes won't take two seconds to push out :y

Rear donuts need a hammer, chisel and pry bar to liberate...

Polys simply push in with a bit of copperslip :y
