Remote Engine Start... any opinions?
« on: 04 December 2013, 19:16:24 »

Hello,

as you know it's cold in the morning now and I've always wanted my car to be warm before I get in.

Did anyone try anything like this? Immobiliser needs to be bypassed, right? Someone recommended that I get it done properly by getting a proper alarm system...

What do you think?

It's quite surprising how much fuel they use when cold. Noticeable on lpg as petrol os used until about 60c on mine.

Using the planets resources to.... Nah, brilliant idea, I want one. :y

I don't like the idea of another fob on the key ring though. But its only for a couple of months, and avoids getting caught out half way up the road when the blasted screen freezes up again.

Our Serg. was speaking the other day now its getting colder about the amount of people who leave their cars running on the drive and telling us to advise them against leaving the keys in. Its amazing how many leave em unlocked / engine running on the drive & wonder why they go missing.

Why not fit a ramar devil / runlock system as fitted to police vehicles?

Start the car, activate the runlock...take the ignition key out, re-insert ignition key when you're ready to go...and drive off. If the brake pedal is depressed, or the handbrake disengaged, the system will cut the engine.

It's not 'remote' but would probably be the only method I would consider, unless you get a fuel burning heater?

I had to "advise" Tonygnome against doing that with my car the other week.

That could work with the remote start, correct? Is it hard to get?

You can buy them new :y no remote start feature, but you can leave the car running and locked without the keys in it. :y

If you just have to have remote start for the sheer hell of it then buy one of theses...

Be warned though fitting remote start makes this system worse than the factory fit system, so your insurers will get pissy...

One of the Glasgow based lads had this feature fitted to his Omega, and was showing it at the Stirling meet many years ago. Looked quite neat, and if I remember correctly, if car was driven off without the key inserted then it cut the engine after a few seconds.
Simples.
