Any play in the wheel/bearing?
No, none either side.
Not the wheel bearing then. :y

You are quite right. Thanks for being firm with me. I was convinced it was wheel bearing, because it was a noise I have never heard before on a car, and which fitted the description of a failing bearing - road speed dependent, independent of power, cornering, braking, and beginning as a low moan, slowly rising to a drone with increasing speed. If not a bearing, what is it? I now think it must be the n/s rear brake, either a rusty disc rubbing the back plate, or something inside the drum brake. Today I shall investigate, and report back.

I've replaced a few and some have been completely playless, only made horrendous noise when driving. One good way to spot rear wheel bearing fault is to drive the car and turn left and right, sound should change if bearing is on its way

Thanks. I performed this test yesterday. Bad news. Turning to the left the noise ceases. Noise seems to come from rear left hand wheel.

I stripped the n/s hand brake last week. There seemed to wear between the brake drum and backplate at the top half, as if rubbing had taken place. I changed the brake drum, but nothing changed. Bother. Job to be done, I fear. I am inclined to change the clutch in the 3.2 first. It sounds easier.

Rear wheel bearing done by an extremely knowledgeable and help Mr Sassenach, who resides in Trowbridge, so not that far from you, took less than an hour !! He has some self-manufactured items which made the job so easy it was gob-smacking !!

I would suggest a PM to him, along with a grovel, and an offer of beer tokens ....you never know your luck unless you ask ....  :)

(If the other one on mine EVER needs doing I will be groveling long and hard !!  )  :)  :)

Thanks. That's excellent news. He offered to help me last year on an ABS and front hub matter. Trowbridge is about 12 miles away. When I approach the job I will make contact.
