Next. Seek a brown connector, mate!  ;) and a code reading is also recommended as give some tip to sort the problem out!  :)

Found cable to knock sensor, below wiring harness on n/s. It was disconnected. I reconnected it. EML light is still on. Codes still 1 2 1 2 1 3 2 1 3 2 1 3 2 1 7 1 7 1 7 1 2 1 2 engine running.

The 17 will possibly be left over from the knock sensor being disconnected, so check 132 in the code list (maint guides)

Thanks.17 is knock sensor, I have corrected that. 132 is Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve Incorrect Feedback Signal. I blanked off the EGR valve in the summer as it was leaking. No EML then. However, the top of the valve - the electric bit -  is very loose. Could this be the problem?

Last night I found an old EGR valve top in my pile of bits, so I fitted it. This one was not loose in any way. But the light stayed on.

This morning I took the car down town. The light was on when I left home, but when i reached my print shop half a mile away the light was off. Since then I have driven 30 miles, and the light has behaved normally. So all is well. Thanks to all for help.
